Jailbroken 3.0 and Cydia is Not Working?! Here is How To Fix It….
by Adam Cecchetto on June 23, 2009 at 9:54 am

Yesterday I updated and jailbroke the new 3.0 firmware for my iPhone 3G. During the jailbreak process using redsn0w 0.72 by the iPhone Dev Team, I installed both Cydia and Icy. To my great dismay, when I attempted to intitiate the essential upgrades in Cydia, I continually received an error that stated,
“couldnt configure pre-depend dpkg for ncurses, probably a dependency cycle”
After doing some research, I found that this error was caused by installing both Cydia and Icy.
The simple fix? Re-jailbreak your phone, but make sure that Icy is not checked to be installed. This will fix the issue with Cydia, and will also leave Icy functioning. There is no need to restore prior to re-jailbreaking, just go through the process again.
I hope that this saves some people the same headaches and wasted time that I had.
If you have any issues, please post and I will help the best I can.
So, with the ease of jailbreaking, will you JB the new firmware, or leave it as is? Comment and let us know!

Well 1hour later i have the device back up with just cydia on, does anyone know if I re-jailbreak and add icy would that work?

June 25th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
@ Justin : If all your Cydia updates are complete, you should be able to re-jailbreak and install Icy… it should work, but don’t quote me on it. Please let me know how it works out!
@ Boomer: I would restore and re-jailbreak. It sounds like something glitched during the JB. Let me know how it turns out!
June 25th, 2009 at 3:30 pm

I had similar issue with ICY and CYDIA. Re-redsn0w’d the phone ONLY without checking ICY and everything I’d installed through ICY but couldn’t through CYDIA is now working but CYDIA wants to upgrade and same error pops up as before.
Should I just use without upgrading and will this eventually be fixed?
June 28th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
Thank You so much great solution
June 28th, 2009 at 5:30 pm
I jailbroke my phone and Cydia was working fine for the first few hours….Now, the phone works but Cydia does not….I select the icon and it tries to pull up and then it just goes back to the main screen with the other icons. Also, When it was working, I had to manually scroll down any listings of apps. It did not have the A-Z tab on the right?!? any feedback
June 29th, 2009 at 9:19 pm
Cydia was working fine for me too for few days until I installed some apps from Apple Apps Store. It just goes back to main screen. Only realise this few days after. Re-redsn0w doesn’t help. Tried reinstalled Cydia from Icy also fails. Any help?
June 30th, 2009 at 6:36 am
I think some Apps. crash with Cydia. After I jailbroke my IPHONE 2G, I can use and install application through Cydia. However, after using other applications e.g. games and You Tube, I am unable to use Cydia similar to the problem of za.IT.

Anybody use iElegance theme? I love this theme but it got screwed when I install Black Light and Metallic Glass SB Setting. Each iElegance icons now appear only 1/4 size from the bottom left of each icon. The top and right part of the icons are cut off. Reinstall doesn’t help.

I’m having the exact same issue as mike, kartik, & jarryd… I’m glad I’m not the only one, but this is the 1st place I’ve found that has even mentioned this problem! has any1 got a resolve yet??
I’ve also tried re-jailbreak, doesn’t help =/
thanx in advance!!
July 7th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
Same issue as above… Cydia working fine for days, (okay… occasional crashes) then today, I hit the icon, it starts to load Cydia, then just dumps back to the Home screen. Tried re-boot - nothing… same results. Would re-jailbreaking help this at all?
<:-(
July 8th, 2009 at 3:00 pm
Same problem as above. I loaded sbs then boss prefs, could it be a problem of these programs negatively effecting each other that has resulted in my cydia crashing everytine I try to use it?
July 8th, 2009 at 3:10 pm
Hello All,
Sorry for the delay in posting, I have been on holidays.
For all of you who are having cydia issues, try this;
1) SSH into your unit
2) Go to /var/lib/dpkg/updates/
3) Delete the numbered files within the folder (i.e. 0000, 0001, 0002 etc.)
That might fix the issue.
NOTE: I do not take any responsibility for any issues this fix may cause
Let me know if this works!
July 8th, 2009 at 11:19 pm
adam - THANK YOU! worked perfectly!! =D

I jailbroke my iPhone again after upgrading to the 3.0 on itunes. Everything seemed to be working fine until I hit the Cydia app. It looked like it wanted to start up (stayed on for a second or two) but then just went back to the home screen. I did not install Icy. Adam, i saw your post on July 8, but don’t know what that means. Could you explain it in easy terms if you think that would help me? (Feel free to e-mail me directly) Thanks a million!!
July 28th, 2009 at 2:16 am
Mine is working fine now after I did a Restore and Jailbroke it using redsn0w 7.2 for Mac. Even iElegance theme works perfectly. Anybody knows how much is iElegance Pro?

August 16th, 2009 at 11:28 pm
This problem is kinda unrelated…
When I search something in cydia, and tap it, there is no longer the helpful menu with the version info ect., now there is the ego tv website. There still is the install button on the top, but that helpful menu is gone. Any ideas?

Do we know what it breaks all of a sudden? One day it worked and the next day it was broken.
Re-J’ing worked like a charm though, I have two iPhone 2g’s and it happened to both of them. I was just curious why it happened. I have tons of app’s & plug-ins on one of them via Cydia and the other barely has anything installed via Cydia. The one thing I do have on both is SBSettings. Which I can’t live without, so I sure hope it’s not that.
September 7th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
Adam Cecchetto or Anyone!
I aqm having the same problem as many people. I jailbreak my iPhone 3G with redsn0w .8 and the 3G 3.0 firmware, select Cydia to install and not Icey. The install seems to go fine but when I try to open up Cydia - it tries to load for a few seconds then crashes back to the home screen. I have checked my /var/lib/dpkg/updates/ folder and there a NO files in there.. How in the world am I suppose to unlock the phone? I can’t install Cydia, I can’t enable ssh to install Cydia via ssh (just was able to look at the file directory contents from iPhoneBrowser), so I am out of ideas here. Re-jailbreaking brings the same result… Can anybody help? Or is there some way I can enable ssh on my phone without Cydia? And then I can use ssh to install Cydia after I get it enabled on my phone?
September 7th, 2009 at 6:07 pm

how can I SSH into my iPhone?
October 28th, 2009 at 12:26 am
So I have the same issue…
cydia when I try yo run it …
it tries to load and then just returns to the iphone main menu.
I downloaded iphonebrowser and followed instructions posted above
#1. SSH into your unit
( I did not secure shell SSH… i believe… just navigated straight to the folder)
#2. Go to /var/lib/dpkg/updates/
#3. Delete the numbered files within the folder (i.e. 0000, 0001, 0002 etc.)
the thing is #3. I have no files in that folder
I just bought this 1st gen off craiglist couple dayz ago…it came with cydia and unlocked i’m on t-mobile.
I would try and re-jailbreak but from what i have been reading from you all…
it doesn’t work…
Any suggestions?
thanks
