App Store on Pace to a Billion?

Plastered across the front page of Apple’s website is the exciting news that the App Store has reached 500 million downloads. While it took the App Store nearly 6 months to reach the 300 million mark, the holiday shopping season proved to be a success as we saw that number almost double in merely one month. After all this success, one would wonder how long it would take for the App Store to reach the 1 billion downloads mark.
One would only imagine that it wouldn’t take long for that 500 million mark to double, especially considering that there are now over 15,000 applications to choose from in the App Store. From Shazam to Super Monkey Ball, there’s something for everyone. And just as it looks like we have seen it all, yet another application manages to blow me away. From the ridiculously over-priced I Am Rich application ($999, removed soon after for obvious reasons) to iFart Mobile ($0.99), I can’t even tell you what we’re going to see next.
The App Store has been a success for Apple, but for some developers it’s been even more. Last October, the 18-year-old developer of the popular Trism ($2.99) application told Apple that this “summer job” has been a huge success. “Selling over 27,000 downloads in the first three weeks means I now have a significant new income stream and some exciting career choices that I didn’t have a couple of months ago.”
What does the App Store mean to you?
