Is next Sunday a Funday?

by Joseph Rossignol on January 16, 2009 at 6:54 pm

UPDATE: Turns out Sunday wasn’t a Funday after all. But thanks to MuscleNerd’s live demos of the iPod touch 2G jailbreak on the day earlier, at least we got a glimpse at what’s coming. MuscleNerd from the iPhone Dev Team did not mention any sort of release date for the jailbreak.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few days, you know that the iPhone Dev Team has managed to jailbreak the new 2nd-gen iPod touch. Joining the 1st-gen iPod touch crowd, users with a 2nd-gen iPod touch will soon be able to modify and customize their iPod touch beyond the limits that Apple set. This includes themes and skins, as well as unapproved third-party applications (nicknamed as the App Store Rejects).

The iPhone Dev Team codenamed this jailbreak as redsn0w, but have yet to release it to the public. But that could change very quickly – my prediction is that next Sunday might just be a Funday. In other words, the redsn0w jailbreak could likely be released this coming Sunday. This is because the iPhone Dev Team tends to release jailbreaks and other projects of theirs on Sundays, which they like to call Fundays. If you have a 2G touch, keep your fingers crossed that this trend continues. And even if you’re old-school and still have the original touch like me, we should still show our support to those with a 2G, so that they can enjoy the jailbreak like we have been fortunate to have for over a year.

Anyone with a 2G iPod touch running Firmware 2.1.1 or a patched version of Firmware 2.2 can jailbreak, and if it’s anything close to the jailbreaking method for the original iPod touch (think QuickPwn) – it’s very straight forward. Better yet, if you run into any problems or another issue arises you can simply hit the restore button in iTunes and voila – you’re back to factory default. A jailbreaking tool will likely be released for both PC and Mac users.

On that note, I would like to correct a common misconception. While most people think jailbreaking your iPod touch is illegal, it’s not. It’s completely legal to jailbreak your iPod touch but it does void the iPod’s warranty. Even that isn’t a problem though because a simple restore erases any traces of a jailbreak and your warranty is in-tact again. That isn’t quite the same case for iPhone users who jailbreak because a diagnostic check can be run by Apple to see if the baseband has been modified.

You can follow the progress of the 2G iPod touch jailbreak by visiting the iPhone Dev Team’s blog or twitter feed here. The team has also created a Twitter feed for redsn0w as well as an official redsn0w website here. At the time of this post there is really nothing to see by visiting the official redsn0w website aside from the picture you see at the top-right of this post.

If you have a 2G iPod touch, will you jailbreak?

I think it might be a stretch to say I have been living under a rock for not knowing this. In fact, I think it’s more likely I would have known this if I had been.
