2009: The Year of the 3G Unlock

by Eric March on December 21, 2008 at 6:10 pm

The 3G been the hardest nut to crack for the iPhone Dev Team.  Jailbreaking presented few problems, but that new baseband is what has given them the biggest headaches.

But that never deterred them, and their persistence has paid off, because the unlock is ready.  Dubbed “Yellowsn0w,” this is the software SIM unlock everyone has been waiting for.  Dev Team member MuscleNerd demonstrated on video (seen below) the barebones application actively unlocking an AT&T-locked phone with a T-Mobile SIM in it, and even called it to prove that it works.  The unlock was fast, taking just a few moments, and seemed to go off without a hitch.

But speaking of hitches, there’s a bit of a catch: You can’t have it yet.  The Dev Team have scheduled a New Years Even 2008 launch date for Yellowsn0w as a festive way to ring in the new year.  Check out MuscleNerd’s video below, and those of you who have been waiting to get an iPhone because you’re with another GSM carrier, now would be a very good time to try and get your hands on one.
