Linux, We Have a Breakthrough!

by Adam Yan on December 1, 2008 at 9:05 pm

Couple days ago, the iPhone/iPod Touch hit a major breakthrough by fully porting and actually starting Linux Kernal 2.6 on the iPhone/iPod Touch. This is a day in history because it means we’re getting closer replacing or even dual booting Apple’s iPhone OS with another OS such as Linux or even Google Android on the already astounding build of the iPhone’s hardware! There are wide libraries that open up if they continue development of Linux for the iPhone… just think.

Don’t think that a mastermind out of the blue showed up and ported this big baby. It’s the masters of the iPhone that we know of who are behind this project; the iPhone Dev Team. Especially planetbeing as he’s the lead worker for the project, along with a couple of his friends.

Though they got Linux running on the iPhone, most things don’t work at the moment. They have little drivers already ported for the iPhone such as the framebuffer driver, serial driver, serial over USB driver and such but they still don’t have all the essentials such as sound, touchscreen, accelerometer, baseband and wireless connection drivers yet. Though, a list of downloads and detailed instructions are available if you want to see your device running something other than the native iPhone OS.

It’s just a matter of time till we see Linux fully ported and possibly even Google Andriod… man that’d be nice.

Why don’t you look at the facts and actually post the truth and PAY ATTENTION before you write.

    1. The Linux Kernal is 2.6

    2. They ARE dual-booting. They even have a video on how to do it, and actually show them running Linux.

    3. This is NOT from the iPhone-Dev Team. This project was headed by planetbeing, who is also a part of the iPhone-Dev Team, but it is not associated with it. The Dev Team does NOT accept donations, while “Linux on the iPhone” does. He (planetbeing) even posted saying “the iphonelinux group is not associated with the group commonly known as the “iPhone Dev Team”" (http://linuxoniphone.blogspot.com/).

So next time, actually do some research, or at least read the post you took the information from.

You still didn’t fix the whole thing. The iPhone-Dev Team did NOT create this. They are in no way associated with this project, other than a person who works for the team made it. In other words, this was not a team effort.
