Saving a Life with an iPhone will Cost You

by Jody Mitoma on October 21, 2008 at 10:01 am

Have a look at a wonderfully written post by Steven Sande via The Unofficial Apple Weblog (see here or via source link) sharing the three best first aid / medical assisting applications available on the iPhone App Store.

“If you came upon someone who was injured or had suffered a medical emergency, would you know how to react? In the midst of a crisis situation, even citizens who have been trained in first aid sometimes forget what they need to do to help save a life.

Several iPhone apps are now available to give you a hand. PhoneAid, First Aid, and 1st Re[s]ponse: Emergency Kit are all designed to be at your fingertips in the event of an emergency. Although it might be difficult or impossible to read an iPhone screen and perform CPR at the same time, the apps can help you or someone else give instructions in a panic situation.”

I will recommend that you at least buy a couple of the three apps, you know, in case of dire need. You never know when you may need something like such.

Hmm… I’m not so sure about this. First aid does require a small amount of actual training in order to be able to do it correctly, and if you do it wrong you can do more harm than good; if you turn someone over without first checking for a broken spine you could cause paralysis, and it’s not hard to break someone’s ribs when giving CPR. Saying that, if they’re alive that’s the most important thing, and a basic principle of first aid is to yield to someone with more experience than you, be that someone with a more advanced qualification or a paramedic.

If I was an app designer, I could not CHARGE for these potentially life saving apps and still sleep at night!
