‘Trapster’ Will Help You Avoid Speeding Tickets, But Only If Users Actually Participate

by Jody Mitoma on October 17, 2008 at 2:25 am

There is a new iPhone application on the lose, which allows you to report any police camping out, catching speeders.

This application however, relies solely on the applications users, which means, if there are not enough users in your area of town, you will not be notified of camping coppers, because the only way you are notified of camping coppers is if another Trapster user points out where the cops are camping out.

I highly doubt this application will take off anytime soon, if at all, because why would you be bothered to pull out your iPhone as you see a cop catching speeders and the likes? Fact be told, it is now illegal to have a cellphone to your ear, or use a cellphone or any other handheld device as you are driving a motored vehicle, so pulling out your iPhone as you see a camping copper would further raise your chances of being pulled over, which I doubt any of you want.

The idea is there, but the way it is all put together just doesn’t work if you ask me.

Anyway, if you’re at all interested, you can have a look at a video presentation of the application here.

Update:

I really must say that I am quite impressed with how well this app is doing.

After further investigating the app and its website, I’ve noticed that the app has the following set of data as of October 17th, 2008:

Actual number of iPhones using Trapster: 40931
Number of Trapster users world-wide: 120518
Number of traps reported world-wide: 59473

Now, that is pretty darn good! Fact is, as I was surfing the site and checking out these numbers, the number of traps reported actually went up one. Right on!
