30% of Smartphone Buyers Switched Cellphone Cariers for iPhone 3G

by Jody Mitoma on October 6, 2008 at 2:53 pm

“Apple’s iPhone 3G apparently created a summertime switch itch: 30% of all the smartphone’s buyers bailed on their existing carriers in order to purchase the device, according to an NPD Group report released Monday.”

More in depth information reveals that 34% of the 30% changed from Verizon, 24% were from T-Mobile, and 19% were from Sprint. It isn’t surprising that Verizon and T-Mobile are ahead of Sprint in this run, and that AT&T in fact was, and still is the #1 carrier in the United States.

Prior to launching its 3G version, Apple’s iPhone accounted for 11% of the smartphone market in 2008. But since the 3G’s launch,
that figure has risen to 17% of the market since the start of
the year.

Such information is not available for Canadians, although I’d love to see how many people had to switch over to Rogers to get the iPhone in Canada.
