The Free App Store Review XX: Frapstr’s New Crib

by Eric March on September 30, 2008 at 10:56 am

Alright, enough teasing.  Although I’m not entirely done with it yet, I’ve decided to pull off the wraps and give up the big reveal.

Yes, those of you who have been wondering, perhaps even anticipating the Big Mystery over the last couple of days need wonder no more — though perhaps some of you have already guessed by the teaser I posted yesterday.

You see, Frapstr’s a man, now, with all of the rights and responsibilities that entails, and that means that, as a responsible parent, it behooved me to kick it out of the house and get it standing on its own two feet.  Of course, I couldn’t do that without at least giving it a place to live, so that is exactly what I’ve done.

The domain name for it isn’t ready yet, so right now, http://frapstr.touchpodium.com http://www.frapstr.com will get you to the proper place.

As for the site itself, Frapstr has grown to the point where a simple weekly article just isn’t enough to contain it anymore.  With the new site I can expand on the concept, offering individual articles to each release, posting releases as they occur instead of waiting to collect them into one weekly compilation, adding user ratings, category filters, better search capabilities, more targeted feature articles, and I get to monkey with the CSS to make it look just so.

There are still some changes and additions to be made over the next short while, mostly behind the scenes, and the new dedicated URL should be live no later than the end of next week, but for right now it’s good enough to let y’all in for a housewarming party so you can check out Frapstr’s new digs.

Head on over to http://www.frapstr.com (don’t get comfy with that URL though) and check out the first addition to The Podium Network!  (Which I suppose makes it a proper network now)  And in case it’s scrolled down too far by the time you get this, don’t forget to check out the welcome message, too.

What’s different is that I could only take the Free App Store Review column so far here. With its own blog I can expand on the concept, improve the format, make searches easier, allow ratings, app category filters, monkey with the CSS to differentiate it by degrees, add more targeted plugins, and tons more. Furthermore it allows me to add new freebies as they’re released rather than waiting to compile them into a roundup.

I think it’s much better this way. It keeps things organized, and well, if you’re looking for application reviews, we’ve now got that covered. Touch Podium is for iPhone and iPod touch related NEWS, not app reviews. We took this into consideration, and started a new blog; The Free App Store Review, or if you’d rather; Frapstr.

We’re just organizing things on our end, making it a better surfing experience for our readers.

Remember, this is just the first of many surprises to be announced in the near future.

In fact, another announcement is just around the corner, however this announcement has nothing to do with iPhone’s and iPod touches – but it does have something to do with The Podium Network as a whole.

Keep a close look out! ;)

Wouldn’t everything be much more organized if you just made a regular website? Have each type of product you want to discuss on different pages, all contained within the same site, and have search options to only search certain parts of the website for the content needed. Having so many blogs just gets cluttered, and having a lot of the page covered in links and ads gets annoying. I think the more professional way to go about expanding Touch Podium would be to not just add more and more blogs, but develop a full website, which will make navigation easier, get rid of the cluttered areas, and make your site stand out more as a serious thing instead of a bunch of blogs, not to mention it gives you a lot more options and capabilities rather than having to deal with the blog’s coding, you would have your own coded to your liking.

What you suggest is much harder. Besides, targeted blogs within a larger network are hardly anything new. Weblogs, Inc, for example. Perhaps you’ve heard of it. Engadget, Engadget Mobile, Engadget HD, TUAW, Switched, etc. Engadget is the catchall, and Mobile, HD, Switched and TUAW target specific segments of the gadget and tech communities. It just makes a lot of sense to let people who are interested in specific areas have one place where they can find information on nothing but that specific interest rather than creating one behemoth site.

Dustin, we’ve only got two blogs in relation to Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch products. It’s not like we’ve got 4 or 5 on the go here. The third blog which is to be announced later tonight, is not in relation to Apple’s two products mentioned earlier. Two blogs is hardly a clutter of blogs.

I personally like the addition of Frapstr, as it keeps things organized.
