Line Rider iRide Review!

by Adam Yan on September 21, 2008 at 11:49 am

Following the recent release of the ever anticipated Line Rider for iPhone/Touch, I seemed to got my hands on a copy and it’s a doozie. First off if you don’t know what or how Line Rider is, it’s pretty easy to learn. This sledder kid named Bosh rides lines; simple enough! But you create the track which is horrifically addicting. On an average Line Rider game, there’s three types of lines. Blue for normal lines, red for acceleration lines, and green for scenery lines; pretty self explanatory.

Features

For the iPhone/Touch version of Line Rider, they haven’t kept it slim. It has most to all the features of the original computer Line Rider just on your miniature device. You got a toolbar on the top of the screen which holds all your tools. You don’t just get pencil type input, but you also got straight line input which is good to see. You have an eraser which can be set to delete a certain type of line if you wanted. You can pinch in to zoom and vice versa, or you could use the simple tool. You get the standard hand to move around the screen, your play, stop etc buttons an ever important flag button to hold your place on the track and they even implemented save, delete and load features! It even has a help section which describes what all the tools do and how they function. What can this thing ever update to?!

Build/Stability

The overall build of the game is very stable. I haven’t had any technical nor cosmetic problems. Everything ran smoothly and had great frame rate. No crashes, freezes or random reboots. They’ve debugged this thing to the max, and will be reliable for hours of endless fun.

Playability

This game is tons of fun. It’s simple to draw lines and watch Bosh ride them. But this is also where the game sort of bends, not because of the game.. because of the device. We all know the iPhone/Touch screen is not the biggest and thats where Line Rider found its flaw. The screen is cluttered, the tool bar itself takes about one fifth of the screen which doesn’t leave a ton to draw about. Of course you can zoom out, but that’s even more difficult to draw; so you must zoom in.

Conclusion

Don’t get me wrong, this is an extroardinary game. It’s implemented most of the features of the original Line Rider so good, you can’t tell whether you’re playing it on a computer or your device. It has endless hours of fun quality and I’ll be surprised if theres an update, with more features. The only thing holding it back if the device itself, but other than that, Line Rider is an a-okay game.
