iPhone 3G Night Vision-Only Hidden Code
by Jody Mitoma on September 21, 2008 at 8:02 pm
An iPhone user in Australia whom was playing with his comcorder’s NightShot mode has spotted a DataMatrix 2D barcode behind the iPhone 3G’s rear plastic (see here). This is not the same case on the first-generation iPhone’s.
It is suspected that the barcode is the iPhone 3G’s IMEI and serial numbers, which very well may be the case.
If any of you know what this barcode is actually used for, with 100% certainty, please let us know within the comments of this story.

funny how this story keeps spreading…
these 2D barcodes are common in high-tech manufacturing e.g. for automated production or inventory control.
inside an iPhone 3G, you’ll find these kind of barcodes on subcomponents like the main PCB, battery pack, LCD module. these particular ones appear to be Data Matrix codes, one of several 2D barcode standards in use.
take a look at the teardown photos available on the web, e.g.

here’s an article describing how these codes are typically used in manufacturing

nothing exciting going on here, in the case of this “discovery” in the iPhone 3G. perhaps the only interesting thing is that the black plastic back appears to be translucent to infrared… perhaps they’re “visible” like this to allow scanning of the fully assembled phone while coming off the production line?
