Fido’s Early Upgrade for iPhone 3G Has Expired

by Eric March on September 21, 2008 at 1:33 pm

Obviously it wasn’t going to last but I’m sure it’s still frustrating to see it go.

Fido’s early upgrade policy for the iPhone 3G — which allowed anyone who had burned through at least 3 months of their contract to upgrade to an iPhone 3G at fully subsidized prices — has come to a close as of September 18th.  It’s back to business as usual for Fido customers, so if you haven’t had a chance to hop on the Apple bandwagon but had planned to, I’m afriad your incentive to do so has just evaporated.

Current HUP policies now state that cusotmers between 3 and 12 months into their contracts can still upgrade, but will have to shell out full pop for the devices ($655 for the 8GB, $755 for the 16GB).  Fortunately they don’t make you extend your contract another 3 years of you’re within this window.  Just to make sure that they haven’t left out the longer-term customers from the uninvited love-in however, customers who have been with them longer but still haven’t burned through their entire contract will also be subject to an “administration fee” (otherwise known as the “bend over and call me daddy” fee) based on the length of time you’ve been on your contract:

  • Customers who have completed 13-15 months of their contract will pay $35 for a 2 year contract, or $110 for a 3 year
  • Customers who have completed 16-18 months of their contract will pay $25 for a 2 year contract, or $85 for a 3 year
  • Customers who have completed 19-21 months of their contract will pay no fee for a 2 year contract, or $60 for a 3 year

Note that this is only for Fido.  No such changes have yet been confirmed for Rogers (their parent company), but similar changes are undoubtedly just a short trip down the path, so if you’re a Rogers customer who has completed only portion of your contract and want to upgrade to the 3G, I’d get right on that before Rogers shows you to the couch, too.
