Schmap.Me Released; Works Marvels for iPhone Users
by Jody Mitoma on September 19, 2008 at 6:14 am

I just received an e-mail from the vice-president of the marketing team for Schmap Inc. I’ve heard of something like this months ago, but never really thought much of it back then. This evening I took a few minutes to have a gander at the wonders of Schmap.me, and I must say, I am quite impressed.
Schmap Inc. already had a page set up for me, which they’ve passed on the URL through e-mail. If any of you are at all interested in having a look at my personal page, it can be found here: http://www.schmap.me/jody.mitoma. Simple, isn’t it? That URL is straight forward, and to the point - just the way I like it.
For those of you without an iPhone or iPod touch at hand, here’s a preview of what a Schmap.me profile looks like on one of the previously mentioned devices when in landscape mode:

Portrait mode can be seen at the top of this post.
What’s cool about this, you’re the one that gets to chose the URL. It’s not just random numbers and letters like some websites would provide.
The best thing about the Schmap.me service is that it works wonders on computers, iPhone’s, and BlackBerry devices in particular. What I like best about the service via an iPhone or iPod touch, is how when you surf to any given schmap.me profile, it provides contact information and the like, but if you flip the device on its side (landscape), it’ll show a full-screen map of where the person or business is located, powered by Google Maps.
Now, nevermind my personal Schmap.me page. I took the few minutes it takes, and created a page for Touch Podium in particular. It can be found at none other than http://www.schmap.me/touchpodium.
Go on and create your own Schmap.me page here.
As you’ll notice if you take a look at Touch Podium’s Contact Us page, I’ve updated the contact information of Eric and I with a link to our dedicated Schmap.me page.
Thanks for the tip, Natalia (VP Marketing, Schmap Inc.).

Very nice indeed, my only concern is that this could be a bit stalkertastic.

Yeah, true enough. So if you’re worried about that kind of stuff, don’t fill in a Schmaps page. Or, if you want a Schmaps page, leave out any information you feel will give your place of residents away - including the map, of course!

A few rudimentary security options options such as say, anonymous access to get limited info plus some contact details and password access to get the good stuff. Hey, if you have people that you really trust give them access to live location info!
I wonder if all that will come in paid version?

Yeah, I’m not really comfortable giving out personal information like that in a place that is publicly accessible by everyone and their schnauser. I understand its intended purpose, I just can’t see too many people signing up to put their personal identifying info out there for everyone and sundry to see.
