Newcomers The Escapers are no strangers to the Mac scene, but this is their first foray into the iPhone gaming scene, and their first release, called “Super Chimp Surprise,” looks like will be a unique and entertaining experience:
London, United Kingdom – The Escapers have released their first iPhone product, an addictive and infuriating puzzle game, Super Chimp Surprise! Super Chimp Surprise! uses cool sound effects and funky graphics to make journeys to work a little less boring.
Chimp! uses many features of the iPhone to make the best gaming experience possible, and unlike some iPhone games, your progress is saved if you switch applications.
To play Super Chimp Surprise!, all you need to do is switch a tile with an adjacent tile, to create sequences of 3 or more tiles. Sounds simple? Try it now and find out how tricky it can be! Extra bonus points can be had for performing many matches at the same time, or by matching 4, 5 or if you really try, 6 tiles.
Super Chimp Surprise! was created exclusively for the iPhone and iPod Touch, making full use of it’s full colour display, hardware graphics acceleration and amazing touch screen.
Sound effects can be quickly turned off without leaving your game if you don’t want to disturb others, and high scores are saved so you can gloat to others about your gaming superiority.
Super Chimp Surprise! is available on the iTunes store right now at a price of £2.99.

Of course, by “unique” I meant “completely derivative,” and by “entertaining,” I meant “not very entertaining.” I just like how they go on about this tile swapping match-3 concept like they’re transmitting this press release from the one 8-foot square patch of planet Earth that hasn’t yet heard of Bejeweled — which, by the by, also saves your progress when you switch apps. To its credit, the graphics are easy enough on the eyes, but the $5 (USD) ticket price certainly doesn’t distract from fact that while it’s half the price of the real Bejeweled, It isn’t giving you anything new or innovative or particularly interesting that isn’t already covered by half a dozen other, cheaper, though not necessarily better Bejeweled-alikes already extant in the App Store. Unless you have a thing for monkeys and fruit. Or you are a monkey. Or a fruit. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Look, kudos to The Escapers for trying, but if you’re going to pick a jumping-off point to launch your App Store career, you might want to select one hundreds of others haven’t already committed suicide from.
Also, the use of the words “chimp” and “surprise” coupled with an icon sporting a monkey that looks like it just relieved itself may not generate in your potential customers the sort of first blush mental picture you had in mind. Just sayin’.
