First Google Android OS Cellphone Revealed Next Week

A screen capture of the T-Mobile event invitation.

T-Mobile sent out invitations (see here) Tuesday, asking the media to gather next week for a first glimps look at the first phone built on the Google Android mobile platform.

The event will be taking place in New York City on September 23rd, and will mark the debut of the cellphone, and the brand new OS the phone is running on.

For now, have a look at Google Android’s video tour (see here). If you’ve got an everyday cellphone you won’t be dissapointed, but then again, if you’re an iPhone or even better, an iPhone 3G owner, you won’t be impressed either. With all honesty, the HTC Dream doesn’t look all that impressive with today’s standards (thanks to Apple).

Engadget has a wack more photographs of the device, so if you’re interested in seeing more of the HTC Dream, have a look at what Engadget has to offer (see here).

If you’re interested in seeing the phone in action, have a look at a video of T-Mobile’s upcoming HTC Dream (G1) below.

The HTC Dream has a fully-functional touch-screen, and is also rumored to have GPS navigation, an accelerometer, and Wi-Fi connection ability. Whether or not the screen is multi-touch, or simply single-touch is unknown to us.

It is being said via the Wall Street Journal that the HTC Dream is to be hitting store shelves as soon as October of this year.

Now, before we close this one off, here’s a You Tube video of the upcoming G1 phone for your viewing pleasure.

Update: The Wall Street Journal reveals this evening that the HTC Dream / G1 will go on sale for $199.99, competing with Apple’s successor; the iPhone 3G. (See here)

Wow. Not quite the performer I thought it was going to be. Scrolling around a web page while zoomed in is pretty jerky, and Quake didn’t even seem to be able to pull off >20FPS consistently. Could be that HTC saddled it with a wimpy processor I suppose, but even then, isn’t that thing supposed to be using a GeForce Go or something?

I dunno. Android’s got gobs of potential. Even the early SDK and simulator I grabbed showed lots of promise, but those demos just aren’t impressing me very much.

It could be an iPhone killer … but I think it’s got work to do if it wants to aspire to that level.
