Press Release: touchGrove’s LED Football Makes the App Store

by Eric March on September 10, 2008 at 7:22 am

Y’all know how much I liked LED Football.  Sure, it’s a simple game, but there’s a whole lotta charm in that simplicity, and it was presented so well it was damn near impossible not to like it.  touchGrove and Neon Surge managed to pack a whole crate of nostalgia into that one little app thanks to some very detail-oriented people who wanted to bring back that classic late-70s handheld experience in a powerful way.  Well, now you lot can finally experience it for yourself, because they’ve finally gotten it across Apple’s borders and into the App Store:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

touchGrove’s retro LED Football game now available for download at the iTunes App Store

ONE OF THE MOST HIGHLY-ANTICIPATED GAME RELEASES FOR THE APPLE IPHONE IS NOW HERE!

La Jolla, Calif. (Sept. 9, 2008) – touchGrove, LLC is stoked to announce the release of its first title for the iPhone, LED Football! Since its release yesterday afternoon, LED Football has already zoomed to within the Top 50 paid downloads on the iTunes App Store. The game is priced at only 99 cents.

LED Football is loosely based on recollections of various handheld electronics sports games from the ’70s. The game features animated “LED” dots simulating offense and defense in a game of football, and which are controlled by interface buttons on the game screen.

Since touchGrove’s announcement on August 28th of its beta test and pending release in the App Store, LED Football has been picked up by dozens of blogs around the internet. Positive response from readers has been overwhelming.

“We can’t see NOT having this little gem on your iPhone or iPod Touch. It’s a win-win! Simple, nostalgic gameplay mixed with the finest of retro sights and sounds. I can’t wait to see what else these folks have up their sleeve.”
- Games Are Evil

“…this app makes me want to find the developer and give him a hug. It’s perfect. The sound, the play, the memories … all there. It’s the kind of thing that when you see it for the first time in 20 years, you are instantly transported to a simpler time…”
- Scott Kleinberg, IFTFIB, Chicago Tribune

“… the attention to detail is stunning… and it is so easy to forget I’m playing it on a phone. Quality workmakship from start to finish and sure to hit any vintage gamer old enough to remember these right between their misty eyes.”
- Eric March, TouchPodium

touchGrove worked with NeonSurge (of SolarQuest fame) to bring their concept and UI to life for the iPhone. NeonSurge also created and engineered the audio for the game.

Hey, look at that, my sound bite made it into a press release!  I’m sure this had absolutely nothing at all to do with my decision to post this press release.  No, seriously, it’s a cool game, it’s dirt cheap, and any nostalgia buff would be seriously remiss if they gave this one a pass.
