Garmin Not Releasing GPS Software for the iPhone, Ever.

by Jody Mitoma on August 28, 2008 at 2:19 pm

Christian S. of the Garmin Mobile Team has informed me that Garmin International does not plan on releasing any software for the iPhone.

In fact, Garmin will be releasing their own touch-style phone in the first half of 2009.

Here’s a copy of the e-mail:

Dear Jody Mitoma,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.
We are not planning to release any programs that are compatible with the
I phone. We will be releasing our own touch style phone in the first
half of 2009. You can see more details about that here:

Calling it I phone is a good way to say you’ve never seen one, barely heard about it, and don’t care. But that’s what PR people do, they stay out of touch, no matter what industry they’re in.

Meh. Not surprising either. Garmin’s been stumping for their forthcoming NuviPhone now for a month or two now, so little wonder they don’t want to support other platforms with their nav software. What little we’ve seen of Garmin’s mobile is wholly uninspiring so far. iPhone killer it ain’t.

For someone who is sure happy to copy/paste tech support responses, you sure didn’t get the legal disclaimer at the bottom forbidding you from sharing the correspondence online. So because the tech support guy doesn’t give you the answer you want (mind you, you probably could have actually looked in the compatibility list on their website to see that the iPhone isn’t supported, but instead you wasted everyone’s time by writing in to technical support), you smear his name all over the web? Pretty shady, imo.

Frank, I’m sorry you feel that way about the whole situation.

Whats the matter? Is the “GPS” in your iPhone not doing so well? Get a stand alone GPS and quit your crying.

Apple doesn’t make products so you will buy from their competition, so why does it surprise you that garmin isn’t? Apple fanatics always have middle child syndrome…
