Touch Podium Welcomes iWebKit

by Eric March on August 23, 2008 at 2:11 pm

We love the iPhone and iPod Touch community. I mean, we must, given how much time spend yacking about them, gushing over new software and accessories, and yes, even being snarky over the crap stuff. (We snipe because we love.) Sometimes we get the opportunity to help out with stuff we like, and that’s cool, because it makes us feel like we’re making a positive contribution to the community beyond just passing on information.

So it is with pleasure that we would like to announce that we’ve set aside some server space so that we could host iWebKit. You may recall my article about it a couple of days ago, wherein I examined the package and pronounced it good. The article took me a little longer to write than I wanted because I couldn’t gain access to his site due to his hosting with 110mb.com. We’ve been there, we know the problems with 110mb.com. It’s probably fine for hosting small sites, but for relatively large blogs like ours or sites that host cool packages for iPhone and iPod Touch, it just wasn’t good enough. Recognizing this, we offered to host iWebKit, and the results are that it now has its own domain and reliable hosting. You can find a permanent link to the site on the sidebar to your right under “Hosted Sites.”

Welcome aboard, iWebKit! Here’s to continued success and a proliferation of mobile-friendly websites.

Looks great, but is it n00b friendly? I’m not the best coder, and I make a ton of mistakes, especially when it comes to tables and such, but is this webkit something anyone can pick up and use? Or would you need to know what you are doing for the most part to be able to use this?

    Bitter.

Will Touch Podium have a mobile iPhone/iPod Touch website designed around iWebkit? I really can’t stand using Safari’s built in RSS reader because I can never read the full article without actually visiting the desktop site.

We’re looking into it, but it’s a little more difficult when you’re dealing with a monster like WordPress, and requires a considerable amount of modification to the CSS and PHP files — not to mention hooking the separate mobile site into the main site’s SQL database. We can’t use iWebKit for it due to do the complexity of the site, so we’d have to create a template based on our existing site.
