QuickPwn Updated, Full 2.x Line Pwnable

by Eric March on August 21, 2008 at 4:15 pm

The Dev Team are hot on the case. The latest bit of news from the land of sunshine, rainbows and Pwnies is QuickPwn, which you’ll recall is the Dev Team’s latest fruit from the loins of its Pwnage parentage. QuickPwn is designed to Pwn, jailbreak, and install Installer and/or Cydia on your device without having to Pwn and flash an .ipsw in DFU mode — it’s all done over USB, no DFU mode or restore required.

Last night it was updated once again. It now includes Poorlad’s GUI by default (until they can get it all prettified up in a more official manner), and now supports all current 2.x firmware revisions (2.0, 2.0.1, 2.0.2), so if you’ve been holding off on that update, you now have a green light.

No, there’s still no baseband update, no still no 3G unlocking. Sorry — but for you Mac users who are waiting for your very own Pwny, their Mac GUI geniuses are working on the OS X version, so just hold your … uh … horses … and it’ll be along shortly.

(Thanks, Lorenz, for pointing this out)

    my pleasure.

i’ll be on that like a starved maniac…
    :-)

will you let us know if you hear about the following (very relevant to my interests :) ):
    - firefox app (hate safari)
    - video recorder (with possible zoom)
    - regular zoom for pics
    - a way to use the iphone as a portable HD (and be able to upload itunes songs from several computers…)
    – although i’m hoping the new quickPwn, will let me do that.

    best regards

    Well, I can say:

    - Firefox: Only through jailbreak, if ever, and that would require a fair bit of reprogramming to adapt the rendering engine to be able to handle the iPhone’s scaling. Apple doesn’t want competing browsers on their iPhone, so you’ll never see this in the App Store.

    - Video recorder: DreamCatcher already has one, but it’s limited in its frame rate and quality and doesn’t do zoom. Plus, it’s pricey. This is another one you won’t see on the App Store because it effectively competes with the camera app.

    - Regular Zoom in Camera App: If ever, that will come from a firmware update. In the mean time, try Snapture. :) The next version of the iPhone will likely have a better camera, but whether or not that will include zoom capabilities is anybody’s guess.

    - Portable HD: Won’t ever happen. Different filesystem entirely (HFS) and Windows can’t read it. Besides that, Apple doesn’t want to give anyone access to that filesystem for security reasons, which makes good sense in the grand scheme of things. The original iPods were one thing, but the iPhone is a whole different ballgame.

    - QuickPwn does none of these things.

Sorry to disappoint, but I gotta keep it real. :)

    Hey Eric,

i Pwned my iphone 3G yesterday. it was “fairly” easy for noobz, and particular awesome (the feeling that is).
    i now have
    - itunes swap: keep 2 separate itunes libraries. very very cool.
    - NES emulator: cool, but still need to search and download ROMs…
    - bunch of themes (winterboard app)
    - snapture: thanks again. i now have zoom. all i need now is a proper free video recorder, and if paid, with excellent features (zoom) and good fps…
    - flashlight: is cool, but eh…
    - Macman Game: eh… it’s ok.

i’m still scavenging for the a HD (hard drive) usage for the iphone. (i’m not one to give up easy…). i saw some apps aboot “Root Partition”. i don’t really know what that means. but, could that be related to my whole HD storage capabilities desires?

    now here’s my question:
“i’ve jailbroken my iphone… what do i do next?” i’d like to download usefull and needful things… but so far it was all more novelty apps than REAL usefull stuff (except the itunes swap and snapture, those were really cool, they are increasing iphones power/capabilities)

    do you, mr eric,
have any suggestions on what we should look for? to make the iphone more effective, more awesome, more powerful, with more options? (useful, i might add)

other than that, many internets to you for helping us (me) out with the QuickPwn.
