Dev Team Releases QuickPwn Beta

If you’re like me, you tend not to keep up to date on all of the latest firmwares until there’s a proper jailbreak solution for it — and even then you may be hesitant to do so with Pwnage/WinPwn because it requires a full device restore once you roll your own firmware. I still haven’t jailbroken my 3G, nor my Wife’s, nor even my iPod Touch, primarily because it requires a full restore and at the moment I just can’t be bothered redoing everything afterwards — especially my Touch, with all of its music.
So it is with interest that I checked their blog today to discover they’ve unveiled a new tool called QuickPwn. This is intended to be for those who don’t want to roll their own firmware and just want to jailbreak their devices (and unlock for the first-gen iPhone - sorry, still no 3G unlock available yet) without having to endure a full restore. In this manner it serves the same purpose as, say, ZiPhone, but in a save Dev-Team developed manner. It’s still in beta but has the necessary requirements to make it functional — but I’ll let them explain:
We’ve got something for you! (No, it’s not the 3G unlock, but still something very useful.)
It’s a tool we’ve been working on to jailbreak a phone more quickly
and easily, without requiring a full restore. Unless you are making a
custom firmware with specific features, there is nothing inherent in
the pwnage process that requires a restore, and we have been planning
this tool for some time. It’s more convenient because you do not need
to make a full IPSW and use iTunes with it, but your phone still ends
up pwned and jailbroken. In an attempt to be more open about our development process, we’re releasing a beta version of quickpwn, for Windows only. Other platforms are coming soon.
What you’re getting here is a development version (mostly feature
complete) of an upcoming tool that we see as a complement to our
current PwnageTool. It’s not ready for everyone just yet, but with a
bit of expertise, it should work nicely for those of you adventurous
enough to try it.Currently QuickPwn requires your device to be running version 2.0.1
of the iPhone/iPod firmware. This requirement will change in a
subsequent release.Remember that although this is a development release, jailbreaking
only deals with the S5L (application processor) side of the device, so
it’s impossible for this to permanently damage your device. This tool and technique has been available to the iPhone research
and hacking community for about 5 days now (if you looked hard enough)
and now that we have released it properly, we are sure you’ll see all
sorts of tools popping back up that have, erm„ been on a long hiatus :-)You can get it here.
QuickPwn.zip is 14781306 bytes and the SHA1 sum is fa1a930f30a5edb27decfcd049b7fdcc455ee276
PS: Yes, our best baseband hackers are working away hard on the 3G unlock, we are not sure when, or even if it is possible, but we’ll keep you informed of any new progress that is made.
Even better, there’s a quick-and-dirty Windows GUI for it avialable now:
“poorlad” has stepped up and created a GUI version of QuickPwn based
on our Windows release earlier, this is a stopgap solution that he
created in a little over 5 hours, great stuff poorlad! It is available for download here but beware this is still
beta software, it is fairly self explanatory and easy to use. You’ll
still see a command-line window popping up when the actual QuickPwn
process takes place, but the device and ipsw selection is handled by
the GUI.A final cross platform GUI for QuickPwn is also being developed, but
this version should help some of you guys and gals right now.
Just to repeat the caveat here: This is Windows-based only at the moment, and you must be running firmware 2.0.1 for now, because that’s all it recognizes. This is still beta remember, and it isn’t nearly as polished as it needs to be, but if you’re adventurous enough, go for it! I know I’m going to give this a shot tonight once I get home from work.
