iPhone 3G Gets New Design Perspective

by Eric March on August 18, 2008 at 10:42 am

It seems that European mobile carrier O2 is privy to some information the rest of us are not — possibly not even The Steve himself. In what I can only gather was either some clandestine meeting with Jonathan Ive or an insider espionage mission into his office, O2 have revealed a new iPhone 3G design in a poster ad shown at London’s Highbury & Islington tube station.

The new form factor takes a bold stride in the direction of oblong, being half an inch wider at the top than the bottom as well as being thicker in general. One can only assume that the new trapezoidal shape is intended to be an ergonomic retooling designed to follow the natural contour and variable flexure of the palm and finger joints, allowing for a firmer, more secure grip that is less likely to slip down through one’s fingers when held in the normal upright position. (Held upside-down, you’re probably screwed.)

If this is Ive’s evolutionary vision of iPhone design then it’s entirely possible that the next generation or two will take the shape of a frustum, or possibly a complete pyramid. No one knows his creative mind for sure, but it is a certainty that the folks behind the D&AD Design Awards will be keeping a close eye on this.

That is, assuming this isn’t just some hack’s poor Photoshop job — but nobody with such a tragic lack of perspective awareness could possibly get a job as a designer, could they? And even if they could, it would never pass the proofing process. Never.

UPDATE: As readers have pointed out, the odd perspective of the iPhone is caused by the curving of the billboard combined with the angle the photograph was taken at.  But don’t let truth stand in the way of a mediocre piece of humour.

How embarresing for you to report this… you do realise that the poster is not flat but curved? therefore if you were to look at if from the front it would look just like the regular iphone!

^agreed. I don’t think it is anything to report about. Actually, it seems odd to even think that Apple would even allow anyone to advertise their product that doesn’t even look like it should.

On review, you’re probably right. I’m just going to go ahead and blame my lack of two-dimensional spatial acuity on a combination of insufficient caffeine and sleep. Because that’s a pretty accurate description of most of my mornings.

    It still looks funny…
