The First Touch Podium Contest EVAR
by Eric March on August 10, 2008 at 12:18 am
Hey, will you look at that? We’re holding a contest! Our first, as it happens — gotta start somewhere I guess. I’ve even got some prizes to give away! You do like prizes, don’t you? Of course you like prizes, everybody likes prizes. But do you like to design graphics? Do you have a first-gen iPhone you’re still giving lots of love to? (Based on our poll results so far, I know some of you do) If you answered “Yes” to these questions, then this contest will be right up your alley.
But we can’t just give them away. That would be, like, unethical or something. So you’ll have to do a bit of work for this one — but don’t worry, we’re not going to ask you to dig a trench or build us an office building or anything. (Although if you absolutely must put your back into something, we wouldn’t turn down the office building.) No, it’s much simpler than that.
What We Want:
We want a springboard web icon for touchpodium.com. A nice one, preferably even-tempered and paper-trained. We could probably make one ourselves, but where’s the fun in that? Let’s see what creative talent we’ve got out there instead. Think you can whip up something that will do us proud sitting on someone’s iPhone or Touch? Then load up your favourite art appy and start drawing! If you don’t have a good art appy but have an eye for design nevertheless, go download the open-source Paint.net or GIMP and have some fun.
The Prizes:
Yeah, we know this is the part you’re most interested in, so let’s lay it on the table:
First Prize: A genuine, often imitated, never duplicated invisibleSHIELD for the first-generation iPhone, graciously furnished by ZAGG Inc., and your icon on the springboard of all of our readers who like putting web pages on their springboard to admire and fawn over. Which is a lot, I assure you. At least a couple dozen. Maybe more.
Second Prize: A genuine, often imitated, never duplicated invisibleSHIELD for the first-generation iPhone, graciously furnished by ZAGG Inc.
Third Prize: An INCASE neoprene 3-in-1 sport case (black) for the first-generation iPhone. It’s very nice, and can be used as just a case, a case with an arm band, or a case with a hand strap. It will fit the iPhone 3G, but it’s a tad tight and the sensor cutouts are in the wrong place, so when you’re on the phone you’ll have to undo the velcro strap and bend the top down so the sensors can pick up the light and turn the screen on again.
The Rules:
We know rules suck, but they’re all that separate us from the savages and military dictatorships, so we’ve got a few we need to get out of the way here.
- This contest is open to citizens of Canada and the continental United States. Hey, we gotta foot the shipping bill, ya know. But more importantly, contest laws differ widely once you start getting all international, so we gotta stick with North America here in order to avoid any legal entanglements, folks. You can still submit icons no matter where you live if you just want to have some fun, but unfortunately we can’t offer the prizes for legal reasons.
- The icon can be as large as you like, but it must be at least 64×64. The winner’s icon will be reduced to icon-size as necessary.
- The image can be in any standard format you prefer, but the first-place winner’s icon will be converted to a 24-bit PNG.
- The image must have the usual rounded corners all standard icons have.
- You must post a link to your icon in the comments of this article; use your favourite image hosting site, or if you don’t have one, hit me up in E-Mail and attach it to your message, and I will add it to the comments myself. You can HTML IMG tags if you want your icon displayed right in the comment. Please make sure you enter a valid E-Mail address in your comment so we can contact you if you win.
- Contest deadline is 11:59:59pm EST on Sunday, August 24th, 2008. The winners will be announced a few days after that.
Alright, enough rules, enough talking. Get iconifying and win some swag!

Since I’m from Germany I’m likely not entiteld to patricipate… But:
:-P
P.S.: There’s no need to round the borders neither to add a shadow. Safari will do it by itself.

Aye! I like that.
Subtle, yet stylin’.
It’s too bad you’re from Germany, Ben.

We were asked via e-mail if you can join the contest even if you were to reside outside of North America.
The answer is yes, but as stated above, you are not eligible to receive one of the prizes.
So if you are interested in having your artwork seen on iPhones and iPods that do have springboard icons to Touch Podium, and testing out your artistic talents, but aren’t too worried about winning a prize, and live outside of North America, feel more than welcome to enter your icon!
