Firmware 2.0.1 Out and About (Updated)
by Eric March on August 4, 2008 at 9:39 pm
Looks like Apple has released the minor revision 2.0.1 firmware update to iTunes for iPhone and iPod Touch. (Not to be confused with version 2.1, which is still running round the developer beta circuit.)
As is common with these non-major revisions, there’s nothing earth shattering that’s new here, just “bug fixes,” including better keyboard responsiveness, improved performance in the contacts application, and — wait, what’s this? Faster backups? Alright, maybe there is something good here. For those of you (myslelf included) who have had to sit there and watch the progress meter creep by with agonizing slowness hour by hour while iTunes performs a backup (assuming you didn’t just skip all that nonsense), this may just be the fix we’ve been waiting for.
First-generation iPhone users can grab the update here, while 3G users can grab their version here, or you can both download it through iTunes. iPod Touch users need to update through iTunes because it’s a protected asset (i.e. it needs to check to make sure you’ve paid for it.) This update is free for Touch users who shelled out the sawbuck for the 2.0 update.
UPDATE: It seems Pwnage/WinPwn 2.0.0.3 does not recognize firmware 2.0.1, so those of you hoping to jailbreak might want to wait ’til the Dev Team updates the app.

I HATED slow backups, I am going to like this update.

It most certainly does NOT check to see if you paid for it, because I didn’t, and it updated just fine.

I should clarify: I was at 2.0, but I had NOT paid for the update. I benefited from the Apple screwup on release day.

I think that still counts, technically, as “paying” for it, because as far as iTunes is concerned you have a valid license for it. The comment about paying for it was mainly aimed at users who had not yet upgraded to 2.0, because iTunes will definitely check for that.

I can definately feel the performance benefits from this update. My keyboard is 3x more responsive.
PS: You guys use the same WindowBlinds skin I do, but I turned off the Full action btns.

I haven’t performed the update yet, but I’m looking forward to it. I’m just waiting to get my hands on the IPSW so I can Pwn it.

Whole thing just seems faster. Though the settings app still dies horribly if you’re downloading something from the app store. Had to force reboot the thing, and when it finished I had the spinning wheel of death for what seemed like forever. Right as I was about to scream and restore for the second time in a day, it sorted itself out.

I’ve noticed that respringing on 2.0 does take an inordinately long time, so I’ve learned to give it a bit of latitude in that department.
I’ma gonna wait ’til Pwnage gets updated to handle 2.0.1 before I go ahead and take the plunge.
