Firmware Mining: Hints of New iPod Touch in 2.1

It’s kind of a no-brainer, what with the next iPod refresh event due in 1-2 months, but the idea of a completely new model of iPod Touch (as opposed to simply the same model with a boost in flash memory) just edged a hair closer to reality as curious developers tear further into the latest firmware beta.
The current model iPod Touch carries an internal hard model designation of “iPod1,1″ regardless of flash size; the model designation identifies major model revisions rather than individual models within a particular line. This is the same as the iPhone’s internal designations — the first-gen carried a model of “iPhone1,1″ while the 3G was assigned “iPhone1,2″.
The latest report from the firmware teardown is that there is a new iPod Touch designation, referred to in the firmware as “iPod2,1″. Most of us knew something would be in the pipe for the next event, but this is the first hint of anything quasi-official that pins it to the corkboard.
With the latest rumour of the next generation iPod Nano, which will allegedly shed its maligned “Phatty” form factor and return to its tall, slender format with a larger 1.5:1 screen, it looks like iPod Rumour season has officially kicked off. Now we wait for the first rendered “leaked” Touch G2 images to arrive.
