Quake4iphone Released to Pwned 2.0 Users

by Eric March on July 29, 2008 at 2:06 am

It was only a few days ago when we talked about ZodTTD porting Quake 1 to the iPhone and iPod Touch. The day has finally come that Zod has released this beast into the wild.

But there’s a catch. You must be running a jailbroken/pwned version of Firmware 2.0. If you are, then you will find it on the built-in ZodTTD repository in Cydia.

The port comes with the 2-level shareware package, but you can SFTP/SCP into your device and shove in the commercial PAK file to play the whole game. (Or ostensibly so; users have reported no success with that yet.) So far it seems to work extremely well, with some minor slowdown here and there, but on the whole quite smooth and fast. I’d love to see an option to manage controller overlay opacity so that it’s not such a distraction, but that’s a personal preference. There were also some spontaneous and seemingly random crashing issues that can get annoying — the video below was my third run at it. Zod’s working on a fix however.

Controls are pretty average fare. The standard 4-way pad, plus jump, fire and pause buttons are there, and you can drag in a non-control area of the overlay to do a mouselook. There’s no strafing yet; users have suggested the accelerometer for that, as well as possibly for looking up and down and/or swimming up and down as well. One other little problem is that multitouch doesn’t seem to work; you can’t run and jump or fire at the same time.

Overall, this is an excellent port despite its flaws, which I am sure will be fixed in time — but I’d expect nothing less from Zod. Check out the action-packed video run through of the first level below to see this thing in action.

Nice video. Is that Frontline Assembly I hear?

Thanks. :) Yep, that’s FLA. I had a tough time picking out a tune for this one; I wanted something harder and edgy, but fast-paced, relatively modern, and definitely industrial, but not Rammstein. (Too cliche’, too Deutsch) “Torched” worked well enough, and had a great intro I could sync a nice opening credits sequence to. ;)
