iPhone Users Lead Mobile Maps Usage in the US

Ever since the release of the iPhone, the use of mobile maps has sored, and now that the iPhone 3G has been released, this sore has skyrocketted to new heights.
ComScore reports that use of mobile maps has jumped 82% in the US and 49% in Europe. In the US, the increase in the number of users accessing maps from a mobile device far outpaced the increase in the number of people who accessed maps via the PC, which to me makes plenty of sense.
Within the US, Apple`s iPhone is leading the mobile market for mobile maps usage, whereas in Europe, Nokia`s N95 and N70 series of cellphones are still doing better than the iPhone – which is most likely caused by the short period of time the iPhone has been available in said country.
“The mobile phone as a personal navigation device makes tremendous sense,” observed Mark Donovan, senior analyst at comScore.
“With the influx of devices, such as the iPhone with GPS, entering the market, Nokia’s purchase of NAVTEQ and the growing popularity of downloadable navigation applications, you don’t need a map to see where this sector is going.”
It surely won`t be long before Apple`s iPhone line up is the leading device for mobile maps usage. Just you wait and see.

Generally speaking, references to Apple’s market share are referring to its ranking among smartphones. Globally Apple’s market share of all phones is a drop in the bucket, but in the smartphone field, their market share is significant.
