Steve Jobs Tears Joe Nocera a New One, Clears Up Health Rumours

by Eric March on July 27, 2008 at 12:05 pm

Although we didn’t cover it, because frankly I didn’t want to give that attention-whoring tabloid escapee the satisfaction of more spotlight, New York Times reporter Joe Nocera decided last Friday that it would be a good idea to rehash that whole Steve’s Health rumour that kicked into high gear with his unusually thin appearance during the WWDC08 keynote. Plus, MacDailyNews did a pretty good job of ripping his artle apart.

But Joe’s article did more than just piss off Mac bloggers. It turns out that no less than Himself, Steve Jobs, found the article, and he was not happy about it, no sir — nor should he have been. What ensued was a phone call and an off-the-record verbal bitch slapping of epic proportions. His opening statement:

This is Steve Jobs. You think I’m an arrogant [expletive] who thinks he’s above the law, and I think you’re a slime bucket who gets most of his facts wrong

He then proceeded to offer Joe some details about the state of his health as long as it would be kept off the record. Naturally, Joe took this opportunity to make journalistic hay and turn the whole thing into a two-page look-at-me editorial in which the putative earlobe-yanking phone call makes an appearance only by the second-last paragraph of page two, tailing even more rehashing of The Steve’s history of health issues, and being capped off with a barb accusing Steve of sharing with him that which he should really have shared with investors first for the good of Apple and Wall Street at large. Stay classy, Joe.

The bottom line is that Steve’s cancer has not returned, nor does he have any new form of cancer. His relatively gaunt appearance during the WWDC keynote, while a shade more than a “common bug,” was nothing that was threatening his life, and none of anyone’s damn business anyway, least of all a two-bit FUD-spewing hack. But he wanted to set the record straight so people would stop riding his butt about it and reassure everyone that he’s still strong like bull. I’m sure we’re all glad that The Steve will still be around for a good while longer — at least until he retires. As for mister Nocera, well … I’d write my own snarky editorial, but I think I’ve given him enough of my time.

I never even knew Jobs had had cancer in the first place until all this blew up in the last few days! So that was at least enlightening.
