Press Release: WHERE Takes iPhone App Store by Storm

by Eric March on July 16, 2008 at 7:09 pm

So, we don’t yet have any useful metrics to determine how well apps are doing in the App Store other than Apple’s general “Over 10,000,000 served” opening weekend figure, but one company is proud enough to crow about their roaring success:

Boston, MA - uLocate Communications, Inc. today announced its award-winning, location-based application, WHERE(TM), is among the most popular applications on the new iPhone App Store pulling in as many as 100 activations per second.

Since the launch of Apple’s new App Store on Friday, WHERE has received over 125,000 downloads, surpassing all other GPS applications on the App Store. In addition, Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal noted WHERE as one of ten applications worth checking out.

“We’re thrilled to see the immense numbers of downloads and popularity of WHERE over the weekend,” said Dan Gilmartin, vice president of marketing, uLocate Communications. “iPhone and iPod users are quickly connecting with the world around them through WHERE’s library of location-enabled widgets, and we look forward to continuing the momentum.”

In addition to the launch widgets, WHERE offers consumers other innovative location based apps including:

* Quibblo: a location-aware quiz application that enables users to take polls and surveys on their iPhone - a recent poll asked, “Will you go hybrid with your next car purchase?” 52% of all users said no, and in uLocate’s hometown of Boston 67% said yes.

* SkyMap: get to know the stars above you.

* Zipcar: locate the Zipcar closest to you.

* HeyWhatsThat: gives you a 360° panoramic sketch labeled with the names of the peaks you’re looking at.

Pricing and Availability:

WHERE is free of charge and available in the U.S., U.K., and Canada for the iPhone and iPod Touch at the App Store. For more information about WHERE, please visit their website.

WHERE, a service of uLocate Communications, connects consumers with people, places and things through the power of location. Whether finding friends in a crowded city, locating the lowest gas prices, satisfying a craving for a latte or scoring tickets to a local show, it’s all about navigating your world. WHERE lets consumers personalize their mobile experience while exploring and sharing interests with friends. Whatever your pursuits, WHERE delivers the best in local information from Eventful, Yelp, GasBuddy, Zipcar, Starbucks, Buddy Beacon(R) and more. For more information, please visit their website.

To be frank I’m not too surprised that it WHERE has taken off as quickly as it has. If anything, it reaffirms my OpEd piece last May, where I espoused the increasing popularity of location-aware applications as being a critical consideration Apple needed to focus on if they wanted to make the 3G a proper and successful competitor going into the second half of the year. Apps like WHERE are just the beginning of the kind of apps we’re going to be seeing a lot more of that will change the way we work and play on the go.
