iPhone 2.0 To Go Gold Friday?

Posted by Eric March on June 25, 2008 at 12:41 pm

Gentlemen, start your iTunes. Word around the water cooler is that Apple might just be getting set to unleash the finalized iPhone 2.0 firmware to the masses this Friday. Sources inside Cupertino’s software development cubes is apparently are claiming that it is “highly probable” that the iPhone 2.0 Golden Master will pop up on iTunes by this Friday, a full two weeks before the release of the iPhone 3G.

This would be good for 3G hopefuls to get their grubby hands on the firmware before camping out in front of Apple stores and carrier outlets across 22 countries to prepare for the Jesus Phone’s second coming. It’s unlikely the App Store will be live at that time, and existing iPhone users obviously won’t have access to location services, but you’ll be able to fiddle with everything else so you know what you’re getting into on the 11th.

Oh now this news I LIKE! Was expecting to have to wait another 16 days or so to get this. Going legit when it comes out. My iPod is acting funky lately, and I’ve been holding off on reseting it until 2.0 came out so I can start clean and don’t have to copy everything over to my iPod twice. If this bundles all the apps AND the 2.0 software update for the iPod for the $10 Jobsy said, I’m so in.

Hmmm i guess we will see tomorrow….

I’m in the same boat regarding the apps upgrade. I tried to purchase it in iTunes but it wouldn’t work so i gave up. I’m hoping they are included in the 2.0 upgrade (wiggly icons would be a requirement i believe…)

Funny that this news is not getting a mention on any other Mac sites though. TP exclusive!

My one big concern is losing the two apps I’ve come to use a lot. One is an ebook reader. Now I know someone will probably release one, but they’ll probably charge. (like that idiotic one that’s out for jailbroken devices now. $35 for a program that reads textfiles…) And Pockettouch has become an absolute must have for me as I find it awesome. I am still baffled as to why Apple didn’t include an on-cable control for the device.

Now I realise 2.0 will probably be hacked and jailbroken etc… But I’m not taking it as a 100% given that it’ll happen soon.

But yeah, if $10 gets me 2.0 AND Mail, Maps etc… Count me in. The apps alone weren’t worth $20 to me. But throw them in with the 2.0 upgrade and call it $10? OH YES!

I never really thought about how they’d handle an upgrade from 1.1.3 to 2.0. Are they going to make you buy 1.1.4 (or pay the difference) before you’re allowed to 2.0? It’ll be interesting to find out.

I’ll be upgrading, but I’ll also be jailbreaking. I may keep my iPod Touch virginal, though. Testing stuff is easier on the iPhone for me.

Okay, I just read the Gizmodo article, and it seems you neglected to mention that if any release is made, it will be developer only.

    From the page:
“Also, remember that releasing a Golden Master internally or to developers doesn’t mean releasing it to the general public. As announced publicly during WWDC, Apple will make the update available in July.”
