Confirmed: P.A. Semi to Design iPhone System-on-a-Chip
by Eric March on June 11, 2008 at 8:31 pm
While the WWDC is still in full swing, the New York Times caught up with The Steve for an interview, wherein he finally revealed the plans for his acquisition of P.A. Semi that we have suspected all along: The semiconductor company will be doing the system-on-a-chip thing for the iPhone.
This will have a number of benefits for Apple. To begin with, they won’t have to outsource their chip design, which will be cheaper, since they will only have to take the final designs to a chip foundry for production, will allow them to cram more innovation into a smaller design, leaving room for more goodies and giving an increase in battery life, and will allow them to be even more secretive about their plans — because we all know how tight-lipped Apple likes to be about forthcoming products.
Sorry. No Apple-powered nukes for those of you who might have been hoping.
