iPhone to Get Joint Launch in Japan and Korea

The Telecoms Korea news service has reported late last week that Apple is planning a special joint release of the 3G iPhone with two carriers: Japan’s NTT DoCoMo, and Korea Telecom Freetel.

NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s predominant mobile phone carrier has more than 50 million subscribers to date.

KTF has 12 million subscribers in South Korea and operations in several other Asian countries, including India, Indonesia and China.

Japan and Korea are two of the most cellphone savvy countries in the world, as I’m sure most of you are already aware of. Features such as multimedia messaging, and “wave to play” services are standard fare for these lucky folk.

If Apple can conclude the deal with these two before Apple’s June 9th Keynote, that would leave China as the last big Asian market without an authorized iPhone carrier.
