Having a look at this press release, you’ll notice that Apple’s U.S. mobile carrier announced Wednesday that roughly 2/3rd’s of its native cellphone network will be 3G ready within the next month or so.
By June 30th, it is being reported that 275 U.S. markets will offer download speeds of 1.4Mbps (1400kbps) and upload speeds of 500 – 800 kbps. This is done using HSDPA for downlink, and HSUPA for uplink.
On a same note, AT&T’s slower EDGE network is rated at approximately 236 kbps, but actual throughput is only around 50 – 90 kbps. (see here)
The company has yet to specify exactly what cities or states are to get the 3G internet speeds, however AT&T did promise that the rest of its 350 markets will be 3G ready by the end of the year, which by then, the network overhaul will have cost the company approximately $20 billion.
On a smiliar note, check out AT&T’s coverage-map, checking the “Show 3G Coverage”, and have a look if you are covered under the company’s current cellphone networks.
What’s more, AT&T has promised to start delivering 7.2 Mbps in selected markets by early next year and maximum throughput of 20 Mbps – Wi-Fi speeds – before the end of 2009. (see here)
