That’s right, one of the folks responsible for bringing us Pandora, whom is known as CraigX over at icontrolpad.com is working on a control pad hardware add-on for the iPhone.
Have a look at this thing below:

Do keep in mind, this is only a prototype, and the final product may not look the same.
This new device will allow you to hold your iPhone as if it were a Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP). The prototype image above shows that it’ll have what seems to be four buttons on the right, and a joystick on the left. Cool! It’s about damn time, too.
The device plugs into the iPhone/iPod Touch Dock Connector, and then wraps around the device itself.
This thing will sell like no one’s business. Kudos to the developers of this project. I can’t wait to see the final product.
This product does not fit on the iPod Touch, seeing as the product measurements are not the same for the iPhone and iPod Touch, however, the folks responsible for this gaming geniocity will be providing us with an “iTouch” - which I imagine they meant “iPod Touch” - version of the gaming pad. Nice!
Have a look at what the folks from icontrolpad.com had to say, just below:
We have our first prototype put together and the design works very well, we don’t have the Start and Select buttons on this version but don’t worry they will be in the final set up. The current system is slightly smaller than the PSP and feels very nice to hold and use.
The iPhone is locked perfectly in place when in the control pad.
And yes, we plan to make an iTouch version too!

I am SO buying this as soon as it comes out. Its a god-send. Seriously, this is definitely going to end my slight jealousy of the PSP, and its great that already they have Zod on board.

I’m looking forward to this as well. Touchscreens are great, but not for gaming.
Funny thing is, I’d considered this exact idea — a slip-in gamepad shell for the iPod Touch that hooked into the dock connector, back when I first got the Touch. I really wished someone would make one, ‘cos I have zero engineering skills when it comes to stuff like this. I’m floored and excited that someone’s really taking up the gauntlet on this project.

whats the point of making something like this if it has a touch screen interface? if someone wants to play with buttons on the side they should just buy a damn psp.. this is a waste of time and talent in my opinion

I’d buy a PSP, but last time I tried one I’ll be damned if I could find the phone app…

[...] Remember iControlPad: The add-on control pad for the iPhone (and iPod Touch)? We talked about it way back in May. [...]
