Looking For an iPhone 2.0? The Line Starts Back There

by Eric March on May 22, 2008 at 7:21 pm

You remember last year’s iPhone release, don’t you? The massive lineups from people who were camped out for days, the media coverage, the hopeful scalpers who thought to buy up the entire store only to run afoul of their one-per-customer limit? That was some launch, huh? With the rumours of a June 9th WWDC keynote launch growing stronger by the day, you early adopters must be gathering your wits about you as you prepare to do it all over again in a couple of weeks, right? Well, I hope those of you in New York aren’t planning on beating the crowd to be first in line, because you’re too late.

You heard me. Some people have already beat you to the punch. Over 60 of them, in fact, and they’re all lined up outside Apple’s 5th Avenue flagship. Two and a half weeks before it is rumoured to be launched. Let me repeat: They’re lining up two and a half weeks early on a rumour. One that’s gaining momentum, and does make a lot of sense, but still unconfirmed. Engadget even has the pictures to prove it.

Now, apparently most there aren’t even sure what exactly it is they’re camping out for, which leads me to believe that Apple’s transparent cube is really a giant focal point for The Steve’s Reality Distortion Field, but some really do believe that they’re camping out for a 3G iPhone. I hope they thought to bring long catheters that they can run out to the nearest sewer grate. Evidently, Apple has had to employ crowd control to keep the campers from getting unruly.

If you’re a Manhattanite stark raving hatstand enough to join in the madness, then you’d best hie over to 5th & E. 58th before the line of sleeping bags is forced to board the ferry.

This was a planned event by “Improv Everywhere”.

Charlie Todd (Improv Everywhere’s founder) denied any involvement.

It could be another part of Improv Everywhere.

Improv Everywhere has over 18,000 “agents” across the world… then again, I don’t even think it was Improv Everywhere to begin withh….

Is the line-up any longer now?… Are they even still there waiting?

No further word as yet. Whether it’s an impromptu Improv Everywhere gathering, I can’t say for certain — it is a bit ridiculous to think this is real, but — well, there it is. Maybe we’ll hear something again soon.
