Futureshop: iPhone Coming to Canada in September

by Jody Mitoma on May 17, 2008 at 7:27 pm

It was 5:20pm, and I had but 40 minutes to get to Futureshop. I had to walk it, having no car insurance at this very time. I grabbed my iPod Touch, slapped on some tunes, lit a smoke, and the journey began. I got to Futureshop at 5:50pm. The store was to close in not but 10 minutes. As thankful as I was to make it on time, I didn’t get what I went for (an iPod Touch portable speaker, OR a portable additional battery), so it ended up being pretty pointless… So I thought.

While I was there, I remembered seeing a 4GB SD memory card on sale for $24.99. Sweet! I couldn’t find it on the store shelves, so I simply asked an associate. He was glad to help, and pointed me in the right direction, and noticed that the wrong price was being posted. No wonder I couldn’t find it!… So anyway, I got my 4GB SD memory card, and it’s working charms. Man, these things have really gone down in price! I remember when a 4GB SD memory card couldn’t be bought for less than $120 — and that wasn’t all that long ago, either!

Okay, I’m blabbing on here… Getting to the point. As the associate was putting the card through the system, I went ahead and popped him the question. “Hey, do you have any idea if you guys will be getting the iPhone, and if so, when?” His reply, which, by the way, was very unexpected, went something like this, “Yeah, we’ll be getting the iPhone sometime in September.” Of course, being as disappointed as I was to hear such ruckus, I then asked, “Wow, really? Do you know when Rogers will be getting it?” He stated, “We’ll be getting it as soon as Rogers does, so most likely in September as well.”

That’s right folks. You heard it here first! The iPhone isn’t coming to Canada in June. It’s coming in September.

Looks like we’ll be waiting another four months before Rogers gets off their lazy asses and gets the iPhone going here in Canada, officially.

Hell, I don’t think I can wait that long. As much as I didn’t want to – it looks like I’ll be going the unlocking-route after all.

Interesting story! Let’s hope it comes true! I have my iPhone already so I’m not complaining! :)

It’s doubtful that Future Shop will carry it. Best buy doesn’t carry it in the states. A sales associate is hardly a reliable source.

Well, my local futureshop just recently started selling cellphones from Rogers, so you never know.

    Oh, lol.
So many rumors, so many incorrect claims.
Only Rogers knows (and a select few within Rogers :) ).

Uh… yeah, I highly doubt that this is true. At all. A Future Shop Sales Associate will know dick all about the arrival of the iPhone – I held a similar position in a similar store and I even asked the Store Manager about when we were gunna stock the iPod Touch… he hadn’t a clue.

A sales associate isn’t gunna know anything – they’re just working for minimum wage like the rest of us retail slaves.

As someone who also works in a related field in a related position as well, I agree with the above.

Sales associates don’t know anything is coming until the day before.

    your an idiot,

dont generalize on one persons mistake… at that time no one new when it was coming out

That’s the problem aaron, hardly anyone ‘knew’ and a sales associate shouldn’t be talking like he does know.

Associates at FutureShop may be slaves, but thankfully they do not work for minimum wage. Joking. Depending on department and the time of year, associates make anywhere between $80 – $250 a day. I had about five shifts before where you make above that. Sometimes a lot above that.

If the general manager and leadership team are good people, it’s an excellent place to work. If not though slavery is a friendly term. Every store is different at different times. I no longer work there.

If you get a full time associate they generally know what’s coming ahead as department sales managers, vendor training, and in-store training keep people in the loop. When the iphone came out I knew we were not going to get it until Rogers was over its exclusivity thing. Which they are now.
