Native iPhone Instant Messanger to be Built off of Jabber/XMPP

by Jody Mitoma on April 28, 2008 at 11:08 am

jbberlogo.pngA TUAW iControl tipster has reported that a new XMPP framework has been spotted in the latest iPhone firmware release. XMPP refers to the open source standard developed by the Jabber community for instant messaging. Apple announced that they would support native instant messaging on the iPhone back in March. Looks like they will be basing it off of Jabber/XMPP.

TUAW is told that this XMPP support remains in a private framework and will not be available to 3rd party SDK developers. Apple is allowing developers little access to the underlying OS and frameworks, which in turn means that single-purpose apps like games should thrive in this development environment, while less bounded utilities like social networking apps will not do as well.
