Native iPhone Instant Messaging Patent

Something we’ve all wanted for quite some time now, is a native iPhone instant messaging client. With the upcoming App Store release, instant messaging apps will not be able to run in the background, which means, you will not be able to receive messages when you’re back at the springboard screen, or if ever you hit the home button. However, this may change, as AppleInsider is reporting that Apple has filed for a patent that will allow the company to incorporate an instant messaging client on the iPhone.

It is being said that Apple filed for this patent way back in August of ‘07, and has only been granted this passed March of ‘08.

The patent image to your right looks similar to the SMS application on the iPhone, with a few differences. One of which is word suggestions that appear as bubbles above the keyword. AppleInsider also reports that this service could be used as a substitue for multi media messaging, which the current iPhone and iPod Touch firmwares are lacking.

You can read the entire patent filing on the USPTO’s website.

Again, we apologize for writing about the news a bit late, folks. I’ve been a bit busy. We’ll be back on track before you know it!
