TextTwist Lexitron Gets Updated
by Eric March on April 19, 2008 at 2:39 am
Digicide has updated his formerly-known-as-TextTwist game Lexitron with a new look and some added features. The name of the game has changed for copyright reasons, and now features some rather nifty new features. It now supports both portrait and landscape modes, visual feedback when you tap letters, and what appears to be a tweaked shake-to-shuffle that I’m not at all sure works quite as well, as whenever I used the shake feature, it would often flip into portrait mode from landscape. A gentle shake usually works but sometimes doesn’t register, and if you shake too hard, your view changes. I think perhaps this needs to be tweaked for the next version. Until then you can disable automatic orientation. It also seems to seize frequently, forcing you to quit and reload the game. Fortunately it saves your progress when you quit. The new title screen and theme look quite nice, too, and there’s now a high score table. Overall, it’s still an excellent word puzzler worth checking out. You’ll need to make sure you have the Jiggy Runtime installed, however.
Lexitron is available on the BigBoss source (http://thebigboss.org/repo.xml)

Thanks for the shout out– regarding the shake-twisting: I encountered the same problem as you, and so added options to turn either twist-shaking or auto-orientation off. When I play, I set ’screen’ to ‘portrait’ and ’shake to scramble’ to ‘on’. This way I can shake all I want and not flip orientations.
I’m glad you kinda sorta like it!

To be certain, I love TextTwist; I’m a bit of a sucker for word games anyway, so it’s great to have this on my iPhone and Touch. Lexitron is an excellent conversion, make no mistake. The siezing does present a problem — I’m not sure what’s causing it but it’s something I haven’t encountered before. I did disable auto orientation though, so that makes a big difference. It would be nice to have a scramble button if shake to scramble is turned off though. I notice the dictionary you use has a lot of odd and non-existent words in it (Fas, Las, Skas, doh, dos, etc.) — not your fault of course, but it does make it harder to get a full set of words.

From my experience, giving the iPod/iPhone a sharp tap on the side is enough to scramble the letters, without rotating the screen. As well as the seizing up bug, I’ve also experienced a bug where the letters from a previous round only appear to dissapear, so that when I add new letters they get placed halfway along, causing a javascript error when I try to submit the word for checking.

Digicide,
I love both Text Twist and Lexitron. I have one suggestion though. Could you make icons that follows the standards of the default iphone icons? It just looks better if icons look similar to each other.
