Conversation with Rogers Employee Reveals iPhone in Canada May 21st

by Jody Mitoma on April 19, 2008 at 7:13 pm

rogers_iphone1.pngEarlier this evening, I was in conversation with my ex-girlfriend, whom is now working at Rogers Wireless, and has been for just less than a month.

Putting aside the fact that she is my ex-girlfriend, she wouldn’t lie about something like this, especially considering she’s the one that brought it up anyway.

Here is a snip of the conversation we had:

(5:22) Jody Mitoma: Where do you work now?
(5:22) R.W. Employee: Rogers Wirelesssssssssssssss
(5:23) Jody Mitoma: Get them to lower their dumb prices so that Canada can finally get the iphoneeeee. they’ll listen to you. haha
(5:23) R.W. Employee: We do have it
lol
(5:23) Jody Mitoma: Canada doesn’t even have ittt. :S
(5:24) R.W. Employee: We have it, and its available starting may 21st
(5:24) Jody Mitoma: You can’t lie like that
Haha, you serious?
(5:25) R.W. Employee: It is true

Also, she went on to tell me how they had a meeting about the iPhone being revealed in Canada just recently.

Of course, the employee does not want her identity revealed, for security and confidentiality purposes.

Evidentially enough, all this does is add to the list of many rumors, but I do trust her, as she’s rarely (if ever) lied to me in the past.

    heh heh heh…

Yes, it is cool for Canadians. Looks like I’ll be getting me an iPhone sooner than I had first imagined. :)

Believe this when we see it. With a month to go, do you not think Apple or Rogers would have made some announcement? Apple is all about the hype.

Not that I care. I have an iPod Touch. I despise cellphones.

The fact that you’ve identified her as your ex-girlfriend makes her incredibly susceptible to being outed… but I suppose that if she’s been told (and presumably isn’t a company executive of some sort, if she just started working there) then lots of people know already.

I wouldn’t go so far as to use the lie word but this whole post has a ring of untrue about it. It is a load of malarky and I do not believe it. I would be very surprised if Rogers has plans to lower their rates to make the iPhone attractive to Canadians.
It is just as likely that Apple is going to introduce a CDMA version that will be available to Canadians at the same time as the Japanese. Bell Canada just might have a surprise for us in June of this year.

Take the rumors with a grain of salt, folks. The only way I’ll believe this 100%, is if we can get some photo’s of the iPhone stock..

So, we’re getting the iPhone before the 3G version is out, eh? I have heard this too many times to believe a “blog”, and even it it does turn out to be true, who would by it with the 3G comming about a month later??? not I.

  9. Jody Mitoma said:

I know what you mean, abe. I highly doubt I’ll get it if it’s going to come out just weeks before the 3G is to be released.

Then again, all we can do is hope that Apple doesn’t slack off in bringing the 3G iPhone to Canada next….

By the way, abe, sweet e-mail address.

I’ve long given up on being even cautiously optimistic where Rogers/iPhone rumors are concerned. iPhoneincanada.ca recently posted a tip saying 90 days, and now this one saying just over a month. It’s this type of constantly rolling rumoring that kept me from buying and unlocking all last year.

I will say though that it isn’t necessary true that there will be much lead-time between an announcement and the release of the iPhone in Canada. Both Ireland and Austria’s iPhone announcements were made only a week before it’s release in those countries.

    As I always say, I hope you’re right…

I doubt it…my friend works for rogers and I was told that if there is any indication that the iphone is coming this quarter…billing info, updating the database with the sku and many things have to happen internally before it can be pushed out. My friend said none of it is done…

I was also told that if anything, the earliest we can see the iphone in Canada would be Q4.

  15. Sid said:

    **there is NOT any indication

I have 2 friends that work at Rogers as well. Both have been with the company for years.
One guy works the retail side – he said the iphone was still in the works and should be here within a month or two.
The other guy works with the corporate side – he said it was being delayed again. He keeps hearing a “few months” still. So that could mean anything.

You Are Wrong. The patent application for the right for Apple to use the name iPhone in canada does not even get reviewed until June 26th! Comwave already has a canadian iPhone and therefore does not want Apple to have an iPhone in canada as well. (If you don’t belive me, go to the Canadian Intellectual Poperty Office website, and search iphone under patent applications.) It could take a good 2 years until the argument to the rights of the name of iPhone gets resolved in court. Furthermore, each party can delay the application, so the process could take longer.

First, if you found a woman that doesn’t lie to you, you need to marry her, they are rare.

Second, I also talked to a Rogers corporate rep (our company is thinking of switching from Bell to Rogers.) He told us to give him till june cause he had a “feeling” we’d be able to get the IPhone with a new contract at that time. Again, nothing solid, but it has convinced us to hold on till June.

  19. Eric March said:

For what it’s worth I have trouble believing we’ll see it in May. It’s too soon. With the 3G on the way and shortages reported in the US (presumably due to no new stock being replaced at retail outlets in anticipation of the G2 iPhone) it seems odd that Apple would suddenly find a few hundred thousand to ship to Canada in a month’s time.

Furthermore, I have no idea how Apple’s going to get around Comwave’s trademark. I imagine they will, but the CIPO works at the speed of bureaucracy just like every other government organization, so it’s really touch-and-go as far as when or if Comwave will give it up. (I’m thinking some considerable amount of money will change hands before they do.)

I’ll just throw this in the ring with the several dozen other iPhone Mk. II rumours that have made the rounds and wait.

How phone savy is she? I certainly hope she’s not mistaking the LG VU for the iPhone

  21. O'toole said:

Well it’s May 21st and it’s not here. So she lied I guess.

  22. Jody Mitoma said:

It’s not that she lied, she informed me that the phone would be coming Q3 of 2008 now. She informed me of this a few days ago. There was another story written about the new conversation we had. She received an e-mail from Rogers corporate.

    Well, so much for that
