Touching Up: WiFi Toggle, Sketches, iPhoneHome, and More

The iPhone and Touch are continuing to gain in popularity both with users and developers. Even being more than two months away from the unveiling of the App Store and official third party apps, there is a ton of news to go around — frankly, more than the two of us can reasonably handle in a timely fashion by giving them their own complete article. Therefore I am presenting a new recurring news roundup series called Touching Up, which will cover smaller news items can can be comfortably tucked into a single article. This is both a way to play catchup with stuff we’ve put off over the last week or so, and a way to save time to try and prevent us from falling behind in the future so that we can continue to provide you with the latest and greatest. Each entry here will have a screenshot or two on the right (if appropriate) that you can click on to view it in full.
In this first edition, we’ll cover WiFi Toggle 1.0, Sketches 0.7, BBInfo 1.1, iPhoneHome 0.8, ClickOnce 0.0.1, firmware 2.0 beta web image saving, and VJing with your Mac and iPhone/Touch.
Without further ado, here is the first installment of Touching Up:
WiFi Toggle 1.0![]()
Helping you along in the quest to simplify things with one-tap Springboard shortcuts is WiFi Toggle 1.0. This simple app does pretty much what it says: If WiFi is on, it will turn it off, and vice-versa. WiFi Toggle 1.0 is available on the iSpazio source (http://repo.ispazio.net)

Sketches 0.7 has received a nice little update: Twitter support! A new option in the Send Picture menu now features a Twitter button. Simply enter your Twitter account information (this only needs to be done once), tag the image with whatever message you wish, tap Tweet, and you wil get a confirmation message when it’s sent. Sketches 0.7 is available on the official AppTapp repo (http://repository.apptapp.com).

For anyone wanted or needed to know everything about their iPhone’s baseband (but were afraid to ask), BBInfo has your ticket. This app, from the developer of Battery Info, will query your baseband and return all available information on it, including device model number, baseband version, SIM information, and more. Baseband Info is available on the Trejan source (http://trejan.com/repo)

Want to change the behaviour of your home key when you double-click it? iPhoneHome will let you. Simply launch the prorgam and select from the list of your installed apps which one you would like to launch when you double-tap the home button (which normally pops up the iPod mini-player). Once an app is chosen, its Springboard icon will feature a smaller icon beside it that denotes that it is the currently selected iPhoneHome launch app. This latest version brings a few visual changes as well as long-awaited fimware 1.1.3+ compatibility. iPhoneHome is available on the Ste Packaging repo (http://repo.smxy.org/iphone-apps/).

We already know that the built-in screenshot key combo has changed in the latest firmware 2.0 beta (to Home+Power, moved from the iPhone-exclusive Home+Vibe toggle), but as it turns out, it will also allow you to save images found on the web from within Mobile Safari to the camera roll.

ClickOnce is perhaps the simplest app in existence: It’s a virtual home button. Why would you want a virtual home button when you’ve got a perfectly good and perfectly real home button right below the screen? Two reasons: 1) To avoid wearing out that real and hard to replace home button, and 2) To give yourself a home button in the event that your real one is already broken. ClickOnce 0.0.1 is available on the iPhone Cake repo (http://iphonecake.com/src/all)

What happens when you combine an iPhone or iPod Touch with an app called MRMR, and a Macbook and a piece of software called Quartz Composer? A backpackable lightshow any VJ (or Jeff Minter) would be proud of — and possibly freaked out by if certain pharmaceuticals get involved. Check out this psychedellink for a video with pretty colours.
