CNet Brings Jailbreaking Topside

by Eric March on April 17, 2008 at 2:00 am

cnet_jailbreak.jpgJailbreaking has always been an underground kinda thing, like most hardware hacks. New users find out about it from friends, Google searches, or forums dedicated to their shiny new toy. It’s not exactly talked about in hushed tones while looking over one’s shoulder for the gendarme, but neither is it regarded as anything more than a hack to make it do things it wasn’t originally intended to do.

But the iPhone, and by association the iPod Touch, are high profile devices and still the darlings of the industry, and unlike other devices that have been hacked open to third party development, these have gained considerable attention even from those who wouldn’t normally consider hacking their devices thanks to programs like Pwned and Ziphone which make the process dead simple. Combine those with the popularity of the devices themselves and it’s only a matter of time before it attracts the notice of big sites that don’t ordinarily report on such things.

Like CNet. In his latest episode of Insider Secrets, Tom Merritt breaks the mould and goes into detail about jailbreaking his iPhone using ZiPhone 3.0, giving newbies the lowdown on where and how they too can free themselves from the shackles of Apple’s restrictions and get them some jailbreak action. Such high profile coverage almost lends an air of legitimacy to the jailbreak process even as Tom cautions users that this is a wholly unauthorized way to use your device and Apple will waggle its meaty finger at any who try to get support from them afterwards.

It’s only a matter of time before Ric Romero picks up on this.

I find it interesting how this guy goes about jailbreaking. I keep hearing how bad ZiPhone is compare to iLiberty, yet he makes it look so perfect in the video. Which is truly better? I myself am still on 1.1.2 because for me, it has everything I need, and no bug fixes fro apps I download, and I haven’t had one problem with it, personally. All I see are problems with 1.1.3/1.1.4 for other people, so I’ll just stick with what I know, haha. So what do most people prefer, ZiPhone or iLiberty? From the looks of the video, ZiPHone has a very professional user intreface, however I have not seen iLiberty yet, so I shouldn’t be one to judge.

I used ziphone. It was easy, straight forward and I haven’t had any problems. I have had to do some SSH’ing to fix TTR but that’s really all. I have no experience with iLiberty so I don’t know.
