IPSWTool Makes Editing .ipsw Firmware Files Easier

IPSWTool makes it easier to edit and compose .ipsw files using the just recently released Pwnage software. Reason for wanting to edit or compose your own .ipsw file is in case you were wanting to create your very own personal iPhone/Touch firmware. That’s right - you can create your own firmwares now.

IPSWTool is the next step of building custom firmwares with the style and grace of iLiberty+. With IPSWTool you can create custom firmwares packaged will all the goodies already downloaded and inserted into the IPSW. These custom firmwares can be restored onto iPhones and i[Pod] Touch[e]s that have already been Pwnd.

Just Another iPhone Blog explains, “The new tool will let you easily add essential and popular iPhone applications via simple checkboxes - things like Installer, the BSD Subsystem, SSH, and an apps pack of BigBoss apps (one of our very favorite sources for great iPhone utilities). The screenshot above also shows another feature that would be superb - the ability to adjust the OS and Media partition sizes on the iPhone. This would mean you could make sure that as soon as your custom firmware is installed, you have plenty of room for applications, without having to move ringtones around or anything like that to create additional space.”

IPSWTool was developed by Thephoneproject and The iPhone Dev Team.
It is due to be be publicly released “soon”.
