Quake III + 2(iPod Touch) = Pure Win
by Eric March on April 5, 2008 at 12:44 pm
April Fools is over, so stop looking at your calendar. This is the real deal, people. Canadian game developers HermitWorks, creators of the rather cool Space Trader, have just posted a short blog entry showing a ridiculously impressive video of Quake III Arena running on two iPod Touch units. Yes, I said two. Network play, baby! The game appears to run at a very impressive frame rate, and it uses the accelerometer for movement and screen taps for firing.
So we’ve been playing around with Quake 3 and Apple’s iTouch. Scott grabbed the icculus source and with a few modifications had it running pretty quick. Here’s a video of him with two iTouch’s in multiplayer.
No word on whether they plan on releasing the binaries for this once they get it fully functional, nor for that matter whether they plan on taking the experiment that far in the first place, but let’s keep whatever appendages are handy crossed. Check out the vid below.

You’ve got to be kidding me. This is amazing, man!
Seeing this just raises my anticipation for June’s upcoming App Store.

Indeed. Seeing them get that kind of performance out of Q3A is pretty damn sweet. I’ve seen Q3A on the Axim X50v/X51v, and even with that 624MHz processor and 16mb Intel 2700G 3D processor via OpenGL-ES, it still ran sluggish. On the Touch, though, it looks like it’s banging out full frame rates there, or at least pretty damn close. That PowerVR chip must be one fine graphics processor.

It just doesn’t get any better then this! But, the cost of 2 iphones to play Quake III is a little bit pricey for me… heh
April 6th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Macgasm, it is not required to have two iPod Touches/iPhones to play the game in single player (if this will even be possible, I don’t know).
It is not your job to buy your friends an iPhone/Touch. You need two players to play co-op Quake III.

I’ve seen videos of WoW “running” on an iPhone/iPodTouch. They probably just had two laptops streaming the video onto the iPTs, or maybe they just uploaded videos onto them and choreographed the sequence. With that said, I am the first skeptical posting, I’d like to have Quake on my iPT, but I’ll remain skeptical till I can.

Crim used the term iPT which I haven’t seen used before. I vote this be the standard way of refering to the iPod Touch. ;-)

How do you do a rocket jump? Tap madly at the screen while shaking it?
April 6th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
Spyder, iPT sounds nice to me.
Mike, good question. It’s possible they haven’t gotten that far yet.

This is amazing. This show how cool things can be made with the iPhone/touch and the touch screen.. can’t wait for the iPhone 2 in June

Try these controls…
Tilt for forward/backward and strafe.
Touch screen for aiming.
Single menu button for shoot.
Good luck with the rest.

Just needs a bluetooth mouse to control it, then it would be near perfect……. maybe some keys like ASDW+space!

For any doubters, I know Scott and one other friend from Hermitworks, and this is not false at all. We both live up in Grande Prairie alberta Canada. The coders at hermitworks are very skilled and I was told that in all honesty it might have taken longer to fake these videos than to make this work on the iPTs.
April 8th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
I never doubted it myself — that’s just way too much freakin’ work to fake that as well as they did. With the Q3A source freely available and proper use of the PowerVR chip, I had no doubt that it was entirely possible. I don’t think I expected it to be that good though.
Canucks FTW!
(Hey, we’re a Canadian site. Gotta show some national pride here.)
Thanks for chiming in though Auxbox. There are some doubters out there (who apparently have no idea how hard that would be to fake) and maybe that’ll convert a few to believers. (Some cry “fake” just to be contrary though. Or because they’re morons.)

Everyone keeps saying thats its too difficult to take…I’m not saying that this is fake (i hope its not) but couldnt it be possible that what we are watching is just two videos of quake gameplay on the iphone and not an actual iphone version of quake?
August 28th, 2008 at 4:35 am
Yes, it is very possible that the two iPod’s simply had videos being played, making it seem as if they were actually playing Quake III.
In fact, that is most likely what it was.
Haven’t heard about any Quake III development in quite some time now! Looks like it’s been cut off.
