Taking a Look at the Firmware 2.0 Inner Shell

by Jody Mitoma on April 3, 2008 at 2:40 pm

Taking a look behind the scenes…Virtualball of the iPod Touch Fans community has recently taken a look at the inner shell of the newly released Firmware 2.0 and shared his findings with us all.

According to Virtualball, Bluetooth GPS and A2DP have all been mentioned in some way or another, from within the programming.

Here is what Virtualball found:

Well, just like last time with 1.1.4, I decided to blast Tegan and Sara and look around the newly leaked 2.0 beta! Here are a couple of things I found:

1. The obvious there’s now a “YouTubePlugIn.webplugin” in Internet Plug-Ins. Someone I know on IRC who has 2.0 on his iPhone (he’s also working on pwnage I think) said it remains dormant though Before you start screaming, “ZOMG FLASH!” I believe it just does what iTransmogrify does. It refrences videos and not flash and has a QTBackground.png in it.

2. ZOMG Bluetooth GPS and A2DP mentioned!?

3. There’s a strange “Printers” folder in /Library. ….I have NO idea….

4. I’m not sure what Google411 is but it’s referenced in Maps.app

5. They are serious about this shit!

6. Last but not least, a sad note. Every trace of Nike+ has been removed. Though, “mobile.radio” is still mentioned, it (and Nike+) have been around since June 29, 2007…

(Little bonus: 2.0 doesn’t come with the AppStore or iTunes, I heard you have to activate to download them? Just a side note)

Thanks for sharing, Virtualball. These are some excellent finds. :)

    Let’s see.

A2DP: Yes! As I predicted. Not that it was hard; A2DP was almost a gimmie. Also, printer folder = bluetooth printing? If they’re gonna add the A2DP profile to the bluetooth stack, might as well add BT printing, right?

    GPS: Also obvious.

Google411 + Maps could mean one of two things. 1) Get 411 information on a location you’re looking at in Google Maps, or maybe a new map layer with points of interest gleaned from Google411.

    Interesting stuff here.

Anything in there that points to use with a Bluetooth keyboard yet?
