Second Generation iPod Touch

According to MacRumors, it is very possible we will be seeing a revised version of the currently available iPod Touches and iPod Nanos come quarter three (July - September) of 2008.

MacRumors also states that Apple seems to be making a chip-making switch over to a new company, leaving Wolfson Microelectronics with nothing but past relationship with the company. It is reported that the company’s stock plumetted 30% because of this decision.

The company stated “Ipods have been a big contributor historically to revenues, so it’s pretty disappointing for them…” said Nick James, an analyst at Panmure Gordon.

Not particularly surprising. Late Q3 (Septemberish) is the usual iPod refresh period, and there are usually new goodies to show off across the bulk of the line. I expect there will be some interesting additions to the Touch. What I’m most curious about, oddly enough, is seeing what they’re going to do with the Classic, Nano and Shuffle. The classic has hit a bit of a wall as far as hardware features go. It can barely get more spacious (and anyway, why would it need to?). The only things I can thin of Apple possibly considering would be doing away with the iconic clickwheel to give it more screen real estate, or packing it with Bluetooth 1.2 or 2.0 with the A2DP profile, and maybe adding WiFi for wireless syncing or something. It’ll be interesting nonetheless.

what does this mean about a new ipod touch coming out? what is new. should i wait for it or buy one now???

Juan, it is totally up to you if you want to wait or not.

Just know this. The current models will lower in price once the new models are out.
If the current iPod Touch has what you want, then by all means, get it. If you want to save up on money and don’t really need the iPod Now, and are willing to wait until Q3 of this year, wait it off and save $100 or so (just a rough estimate).

I personally cannot wait to see what Apple’s got in min for the new models. I’ve no idea what they will have in addition to the one’s that are selling now.

We’ll just have to wait it off and see. :)

have there been any more rumors of a new iTouch??

if so when are they expected to come out??

  7. Eric March said:

No rumours yet, but I expect they’ll be coming along very shortly. The usual period for the iPod refresh is August/September, so we will probably be seeing something come out then, with the rumours most likely starting next month. (They started earlier last year because of the rumours of an iPhone-like device without the phone; now that we know what it was the rumours will mainly center on what they’re going to add to the next iteration of the Touch.)

i was just on apple.com and they are giving them away with laptops so i think they are trying to get rid of them

They do have quite a few of the 8gb models earmarked for their Back to School promo, yes, but that’s beside the general stock they have for retail outlets. I don’t know if we’re going to start seeing shortages before the new batch come out; typically what we see with the iPods is the new model will be announced and the old models will go on clearance.
