iPhone Firmware 2.0 Built-in Screenshot Keys Uncovered

iphone_screenshot_20.jpgYou may recall a couple of weeks ago that RiP Dev discovered that the iPhone has built-in screenshot capabilities.  All you had to do was hold the HOME button while you flicked the mute switch.  The screen would flash white and your screenshot would turn up in your camera roll.  That changed with the beta 1.2/2.0 firmware; the same key/switch combination didn’t work.  Fortunately, while fiddling around with his sacrificial developer iPhone, TUAW member Scott stumbled upon the new key combo.  With the new firmware, you need to hold the power button, followed by the home button.  The familiar screen flash will occur and once again your screenshots will appear in the camera roll.  Hopefully this feature will survive the public release in June.

My guess is that this was done, obviously, so that it would work on the iPod Touch as well, seeing as the iPod Touch does not have a “volume switch”. :) Way to go Apple.

Good point — except the screenshots are stored in the iPhone’s camera roll. The Touch doesn’t have that, and the only way it would work for the Touch is if it created the appropriate DCIM directory and allowed the Touch to be installed on your PC as a camera device.
