Pwnage Preview Demoed in Russia

by Eric March on March 29, 2008 at 9:58 pm

In soviet Russia, iPhone Pwns You!In case you’re not aware, the iPhone Dev Team have been hard at work on the next generation jailbreak. It’s called Project Pwnage, and it aims to violate your firmware in ways it couldn’t even conceive of in its worst nightmares. The purpose of Pwnage is to allow its wielder to roll your own completely custom firmware that not only restores, jailbreaks, and activates your iPhone (and presumably iPod Touch, once it reaches maturity), but also lets you install custom firmware, software, alternative bootloaders, and more, on 1.1.3 and 1.1.4, and even the forthcoming 2.0, right through iTunes itself — all by taking advantage of an exploit that bypasses the code signing checks, thus allowing any firmware, signed or not, to be installed. Whether you’ve jailbroken your device before or just took it out of the box, Pwnage will break it wide open. Unfortunately, it will only be available for Mac OS X 10.4+ for the moment. Hopefully a Windows version will be along eventually.

A demonstration of Pwnage took place at the recent iPhone Party 3.0 in Moscow, Russia. A pretty detailed video showing all of the current and upcoming features has now been made available, showing the restoration of custom firmware, including a real, working Firmware 1.2 (2.0) installed and properly Pwned. You’ll find the embedded YouTube video below, as well as a pair of high quality MP4s you can download. For more (and slightly technical) information on Pwnage, head on over to the Pwnage page.

ПРЕВЕД! = Preved! It’s a Russian Internet meme born from an image bearing a misspelling of “приве́т” (”Hi!”). You can read more about it here.

    I think I found a typo:
“…violate your firmware it ways it couldn’t even conceive …”
    Shouldn’t it be “…in ways it…” instead? :P
