Cracks.app - Simulates a Broken Screen. Fool Your Friends!
by Jody Mitoma on March 28, 2008 at 10:10 pm
hxc maniac of the iPod Touch Fans community, on January 6th, made an interesting suggestion to have an app that simulated a broken screen for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
He wrote:
It would be cool if there was an app, that when you touch the screen, you see cracks where you touched it. And if you touch it enough, the screen flickers for a few seconds, then either some error message saying to replace the screen comes up, or just black comes up.
It would be pointless, but it would be fun to trick your friends into thinking they just broke your fancy new iPod touch.
As far as I know, the Xteam (as introduced below) took over this project, and released it to the public for download.
I gave it a go myself, and am pretty satisfied with it. It’s a neat little toy to mess with your friends with, but of course - like all one time things - it’ll get old fast.
According to recent replies in the thread (provided as a source link below) there is a version which stops the home button from working as the app is running. I personally downloaded and manually installed this app a few days ago, and the version I have doesn’t do this. The home button brings you back to the home page. However, It may be possible that I just installed an older version.
Installation:
To download and install this app, add the following source to installer: lazyasada.xeterdesign.com/repo.xml
Give it a shot. Let us know if you were able to fool any of your friends.

Can someone show me a screenshot of this app.?

Shesh! Not only can’t I find any on the net, but my Capture app just isn’t working right now!
Sorry man.
I can explain what it does for you though.
What it does, is, when you start the app itself, it brings up a photo (covering the whole screen) of a summerboard theme (pretty basic). This is where you fool your friend. You pass him/her the iPod, and get them to press the iTunes app. (Try and play it cool ;)). Once they’ve tapped that corner of the screen (or anywhere actually), the screen will then show up cracked. (just search up any cracked screen using google. They all look pretty similar, with ink spilling, etc.) The screen the starts to flicker black then back to a cracked screen with visible summerboard icons in the background at certain places. It’s pretty neat, but I personally feel it flashes far too much. Should only flash maybe if you touch the screen, or something.
Anyway, check it out. It’s pretty neat.

Besides downloading cracks.app, you also need jiggy app. That’s an awful consumption of space on an 8GB touch.
I’m gonna pass on this one…

Ollie, what do you mean it’s an awful consumption of space?… Jiggy app and Cracks app are in fact quite small, as far as I’m concerned.
