10M 3G iPhones and OLED Coming?

Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney is nothing if not skilled at doing end-runs around Cupertino’s Cone of Silence. This time he’s reporting back that his “sources in Asia” have stated that Apple has placed an order for 10 million 3G iPhones, which is a pretty massive order; if true, Apple is anticipating a pretty high demand for the G2 iPhone, and the timing of the order adds some additional weight to the idea that the next gen phone could be out in a little as a few months.
Furthermore, Dulaney goes on to speculate that the new devices may contain OLED screens which would help improve battery life — Apple’s primary reason for not incorporating 3G into their first gen iPhones in the first place. OLED screens would also look much more vibrant and would not suffer image washout when viewed from an angle, which would be very sweet indeed. Unfortunately, this is only speculation; there is no hard evidence to suggest that Apple has any plans for an OLED screen just yet. Still, we can hope.

OLED screens would be awesome, especially if they are on par with the contrast ratio of the SONY XEL-1. Almost true black on a tiny device such as the iPhone/iPod touch is enough to make me upgrade from my current 16GB touch.

OLED would be simply amazing. It’ll be possible to make the iPhone G2 even skinnier than the current iPhone with the new technology!
Can’t wait to see what Apple’s got in their sleeves.

Exactly what I am waiting for. I’ve heard similar rumours about G2 iPhones having 3G, which is what is holding me back from purchasing one right now. If it does indeed have 3G, then I will definetly upgrade from my iPod Touch to a G2 iPhone; the OLED screens would be an even bigger incentive!

OLED would be incredible. Deep blacks and vibrant colours would make videos look incredible. The 3G is of course hotly anticipated, but me living in Canada and on the Rogers network, even if the rumors of price revision pan out, it’s still not going to be cheap.
