All iPhone Commercials Now Available For Streaming/Download Here.
Also, a Wider Touch Podium
by Jody Mitoma on March 20, 2008 at 12:20 am

One of the video-related projects I was talking about in this post, is what I’ve got for you tonight.
I took the time to find, download, re-upload onto the Touch Podium paid servers, and then embed every single iPhone Commercial that is available to you as of now. (16 commercials, to be exact. Don’t ask my why Apple has made so many iPhone commercials, but it was a damn pain to have to embed so many of ‘em, that’s for sure!)
The videos are in 640×480 (some 640×360) glory. That’s right. None of that crappy YouTube sh!t here, folks.
Go on and check out the commercials now – if you haven’t seen all 16 of them already! Eat up our bandwidth! Don’t worry, we’ve got plenty.
Hopefully these will become useful to some of you.
And yes… The iPod Touch Commercials are just around the corner, so stay tuned!
…
Oh, and one more thing. In case you haven’t noticed – or, you have noticed, but just weren’t sure if you were seeing things – we’ve widened the Touch Podium story column by 200 pixels. We’ve been wanting to do this for a while now, but weren’t too sure if we should. Tonight I just went ahead and did it, no questions asked. I’m very pleased with the results, and I’m sure most of you (excluding those of you who are still on 800×600 [and even 1024x767] resolutions) are, as well.

Whats going on with all this iPhone stuff lately. I though it was Touch Podium.
Don’t take that the wrong way, it’s just a little different, and that’s my opinion.
Also to add to this. You don’t even have the iPod Touch commercials.

…. the widening of the columns is great, but could you look into the fact that the white background does not extend to cover the whole width of the post on Safari, but stay at the original width of the posts?
Also, why on earth are you discriminating against people on lower screen resolutions at all? It’s not at all neccessary; all one has to do is change (in the stylesheet) .classname { width: ___px; } to .classname { width: __%; } . That way, those with larger screen resolutions can benefit from the extra space, but those with smaller screen resolutions don’t have to suffer.
Furthermore, before making decisions like this you should probably consider statistics such as these:

Oops; the non-widening of the background was due to the background image being cached and not updated, not a coding error. Sorry about that.

Thank you kindly James.
This was only a temporary thing until we figured out how to do – which you just showed us how to do, and again, I’d like to thank you for that – very much.
I’ll get on changing this as soon as I could!
Only problem will be is, how do I get the header image to change with the width percentage?
Take care James.

Stephen, Touch Podium is both an iPhone and iPod Touch news source. Both of the products are almost identical anyway – what’s the big deal?
Like I wrote in the post above – the iPod Touch commercials are coming… and I’m not interested in any YouTube crap – thanks.

Actually, James, the background consists of an image (http://www.touchpodium.com/wp-content/themes/Cleaker2.1%20with%20Widget%20Support/Cleaker/images/contentBg2.gif) which I couldn’t just widen and shorten without losing quality…. So, I’m not sure how I would go about doing this any longer.

Well, the fixed size of the logo and background image is definitely a problem.. I suppose one solution would be to feed users a different style-sheet depending on their resolution, which could be accomplished using javascript, or have one style sheet but with if statements that change the width of the columns and the background images depending on the user’s resolution. However, I don’t know whether such a feature is supported.

Oh, and you could also replace the background with a solid colour, or a repeated image, then have a separate imagine (contained within its own div) for the fancy edging. As for the logo, you could have one logo of fixed size, and a solid colour (or a simple, matching image) in the background.

Only 10% of internet users world-wide are on 800×600 resolution. That’ll only go down as we move on into the future. Yes, a good 50% of users are on 1024×768, but that’ll also go down as we move forward in the world of technology… Also, the website doesn’t even look that bad on 1024×768 anyway.
That seems like too much work for now. I may think about doing that at some other point. Thank you for taking the time to explain, James.

Awesome, thanks for informing me of that.
Albeit, this isn’t a graphic designer’s job, more-so a web designers job. (Do you know much about CSS?)
Currently, I don’t have the money saved up to be spending it on Touch Podium, but in the near future I will definitely consider your offer.
How much would you be asking for just to transform this current layout into a fluid width (extend to the maximum width of each users screen resolution) layout?
If you aren’t asking for much, I will definitely re-consider and do this sooner than expected.
Get back to me by through e-mail me at jody.mitoma@gmail.com.
Thanks again man.

For the record, I myself would be willing to help out in future with web design issues. I am pretty much fluent in CSS and HTML (but who isn’t fluent in HTML these days?). I would be perfectly willing to do it for free on a non-committal basis; I appreciate what you guys are doing and would be more than willing to give something back.
Saying that, I’m about to go off skiing for a week. But if you ever need any help in future:

Wow, thank you very much James. It’s nice to see how my readers are willing to help me in situations such as this one.
James, if Joseph doesn’t get back to me by the morning, I’ll be sure to give you a shout at the e-mail provided. Don’t see a reason to turn down such a great opportunity.
Also, I see you have a blog. Did you want to affiliate (trade links) with me?
Thanks again. I’ll get back to you.
